But wouldn't it be pretty fecking boring if we just voted on which team was favourite, then gave them the trophy?

The ebb and flow, the outside chance, the uncertainty, the very occasional shock result, Aussie openers getting ducks ... - that's what sport is about!

Save the unforgettable, miraculous performance at Headingley, I think the Aussies Smith  deserve the Ashes.

This, of course, is true....but credit where credit's due, and, make no mistake, when the Aussies have needed to bowl well - they have done.
And we haven't been quite so consistent. Not helped of course by the batsmen making life so demoralisingly difficult for the English bowlers.

Although, I must say I taken I've taken immense pleasure in seeing Broad utterly own Warner :-) love it.
And I'm kind of so pleased for Broad. For obvious reasons :-)

WELL:
We only have 43 overs to survive, 4 wickets spare, and the current batters have both scored 1st class centuries. So there's still hope!

Oh yes, hope is the worst scenario ...

Breakfast table this morning:

Me: I see England lost the Ashes.

MrsT: Mmm? Oh. Who won them, then?
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

Essex's tenure at the top of the County Championship looks a little insecure after Warks's very impressive first day, finishing on 269-3.

Maybe Warks can open for England?

Would have been worth a try, judging by how things are going so far today.

Essex batted well enough, but they won't win. Somerset, on the other hand, won very well against Yorks. Somerset must now be favourites to take the County Championship for the first time. It's quite surprising that they hadn't won it before given that at the sae time they had Viv Richards, Ian Botham, Joel Garner and Vic marks playing for them. It's 40 years since Essex and Somerset first won anything. In 1979, Essex won the Benson & Hedges Cup and the County Championship, Somerset the John Player League and the Gilette Cup.

I think it's a real shame that the County Championship has been relegated to having its climax in the second half of September. The chances of shit weather and bad light must increase hugely after the equinox.

Match drawn at Edgbaston. Essex followed on but batted out the day with no difficulty. Two more matches to go now. The title will be decided (probably) when Somerset entertain Essex starting on 23rd. Somerset’s win gives them a lead of 17 points. It’s going to be all ticket by the sound of it.

Fantastic ball by Lyon to bowl Stokes - I love watching deliveries like that.

Beautiful day down there at the Oval. Some useful batting practice to be had too :-)

My Ashes record (to date): Seen 2 (days), won 2 (tests).

Oval Day 1 was not quite Headingley Day 4, but it was a very pleasant day off work in the sun nonetheless (and with Buttler free-hitting and Leach stalwart at the other end the last hour had certain echoes of that occasion).

Anybody else think Jofra Archer made a bit of a fool of himself with his staring at Wade?  I don't know what occasioned it, but Wade scored another forty-odd runs after the incident.

Nope.

Wade is a gobby chap and had been chirping all day the day before. They're team mates in the BBL, but that all gets forgotten when they're on opposing teams in a test match.

Meanwhile, in the cricket that matters  ;) ...

Somerset have a challenge ahead against Hampshire in a low-scoring match. With 2 days to go, and with none of the innings to date reaching 200, Hampshire lead by 230 with 2 second innings wickets intact.

Essex are strolling along nicely against Surrey. Their first innings lead is already 128 and they have 4 wickets in hand.

It would be something of a surprise, therefore, if Somerset were still top of the table going into the last match, which will be Somerset v Essex.

I haven't followed county cricket since the Championship was broken up into 2 divisions, but I don't remember matches continuing so late into September in the Good Old Days. I do recall, 40 years ago, that Essex were declared champions in mid-August, such was their lead. Could this be the latest in the season that the County Championship has been decided?

Surrey (5/0) need 221 to make Essex bat again.

Somerset (35/0) need 281 to beat Hampshire.

Interestingly poised...
