Your next 1200?

No plans yet.  Mrs CET has vetoed anything next year and I will be helping with LEL in '13.  Was originally going to take time to climb Mt Robson in the Rockies in 2014 so it might end up being PBP '15    However, do have a hankering for Madrid - Gijon - Madrid if it runs again.

It does sound rather 'shoestring' - All the controls are described as 'postcard or photo if you can't find a stamp'.

I'm used to that! All of my brevet qualifiers were like that!

If you guys seriously think offering support would be welcome then I'll contact the organiser. If the organiser didn't want to re-route via my place, the route actually passes through the town of my club and I could probably find someone to man a control/support. Reckon I'll be riding it, too convenient not too. Plus I can prepare for/reccie much of the ride at my leisure.  Quite excited by the prospect in honesty!

Why does everyone keep talking about a dutch 1400 or the lowlands 1400?

I was talking to Gerricht at PBP and he said nothing about increasing the distance, is it still a 1200 and a simple mistake by posters or is everyone talking about something else compared to me.

There are two different events, the Lowlands 1200 which was held last year and the Dutch capitals 1400 which will be held next year. The link I gave is the link from the organiser.

I can recommend you the Bavarian 1200k starting August 13th in Osterdorf, roughly between Munich & Nuremberg (closer to Nuremberg)

The ride is actually 1267k (at least was in 2009) and has about 13000m of climb. It is quite tough. You basically follow the border of Bavaria with some riding in the Alps as well.

Els, you should enter. that is all you have to do. Don't make any plans to actually go there and ride it. After all, entering it is really very easy . And a journey of 1,000 miles starts with the first step.

Then once you have entered it, you can decide whether or not you want to ride it. That decision is easy to make.

Should you then decide you want to ride it, then just go and do it.

What could be easier?

Speaking of German rides, I am mightily intrigued by this ride - the Grenzstein Trophy (aka Border Stone Trophy). A north to south ride along the former German Iron Curtain, ca 1300km off-road, zero pre-arranged support. Not an Audax but pretty much in the spirit of audax. Paul Errington (who abandoned the ride after 700km on a single speed MTB) wrote about the 2011 edition here - http://shoestring-racing.blogspot.com/2011/06/grenzstein-experience.html .

... after all, Mille Alba is not really a step up from PBP this year...

I've also been interested in this since I heard about it last year. Paul Errington wasn't very complimentary about the quality of the route last year, but a new (better?) route seems to be being planned for 2012.

It looks to be a truly epic ride, and not without challenge - from the website....

This will not be an easy ride with over 14,000m of climbing but the scenery is wonderful.

Accommodation is limited with YHA hostels at Wanaka (470km), Franz Josef (756km) and Greymouth (930km).

There is a camping ground at Omarama (358km) and a backpacker lodge at Haast (615km) and at Lake Paringa (663km).

Not sure I'd fancy lugging camping gear around those climbs (though some NZ campsites do have cabins too) so I'd be looking at the YHAs plus finding something before 470km as a just-in-case.

I reckon it'll be a beaut of a ride!

Edit: the Omarama camping does have cabins "single traveller cabins (backpacker type)" - sorted!!

If I had lots of money it would be the Rocky mountain 1200 however I haven't 

But I am doing the Mille Alba next year 

I'd like to do the Rocky Mountain too.   I have an old friend that lives out there who would be good to visit as part of a trip to do this.  But a combination of various things mean that this is unlikely

It says the GPS track will be online July 15 (actually "around" July 15). Dates are official when announced after November 1st, as they have been told to ACP and the Dutch Cycle Touring Association by then.
