Why do dogs run away when they have pooped ?

They love sniffing other dogs (and in fact any other animals poop) but when they have a dump themselves they immediately run away from it. Odd.

When I had dogs I noticed that if any of the 3 had a dump at the same moment they would all face in the same direction (facing into the wind)

Probably because fresh scat is more odorous and so would give their location away to would-be prebendaries predators.

My cats quite often have a mad dash about after a poop as well. I just assumed it was something to do with 'feeling a sense of well being' as the bog roll adverts put it.

No, it's because the Poo Monster who lurks in the garden after dark will catch you if you don't run. Ethel-not usually returns to the hous in a howling panic after a night-time poo.

Both of our dogs will stay out playing in the garden until we tell them to come in, at which time they'll dash off for a Parthian crap, leaving us standing at the top of the steps like eejits.  Can't teach them to work on the crap now, play later plan.

In answer to th OP, for the same reason thai I don't hang around in the khasi after I have evacuated. It is bad enough for humans, but a dog's brain is, allegedly, 80% geared to olfactory functionality. You want to put as much distance between you and that steaming pile of turd as possible.
