Buggrit! He's bought an iPhone2
« on: 11 July, 2008, 05:32:32 pm »
Mr R (despite yesterday claiming he was close to Death's door and prescribing himself antibiotics) got up at the crack of dawn and went and queued for one of the new iPhones.

Which means I'm going to have to go and buy one now, otherwise we'll be on different networks.  The downside of living with a rich technogeek....

They do look quite nice although the "Twice the speed, half the price." marketing is a bit of a slap in the face for everyone who stumped up for the original.

Battery life could be better, only 5 hours on 3G. Another negative is being stuck on BT Cellnet O2.

I'd certainly consider one if I ever have to start paying my own mobile bill. :)

I thought about it for a while.  Having considered various opinions, I decided against.

I still haven't decided what to get though.

I have one waiting for me in Stroud O2 shop. The staff have been brilliant. The O2 IT system has been worthy of the Passport Office. With Fairford cancelled tomorrow I have another opportunity to collect it!
It is simpler than it looks.

So he got one despite all the consignments of fail delivered to the computer system ::-)

Does this mean you can get a new bike now? ;)
Getting there...

Why is that a problem?   We are deliberately on different networks to minimise coverage issues.

I resent that! One of my gadgets is not an Apple one!  ;D

Actually I'm seriously considering not taking the one that is waiting for me and holding off until I can get a 16GB one...

Now that requires will-power!

Is that an iphone thing?   Makes no difference at all on my contract, the only calls that seem to come up as a cost are international...

"Get unlimited O2 to O2 calls when you buy an 18 month online tariff at £25 or £30 per month (200 mins + tariffs)."

AFAIK Orange also had 'free' Orange to Orange calls when I was with them.
It is simpler than it looks.

Is this a good time to mention that my May mobile phone bill was 9p?  It leapt to £2.25 in June.

At the moment we are both on Virgin PAYG (which I've found to be excellent BTW - average bill £13 p/m).  If he goes to O2 and I stay on Virgin then the inter-operator calls are expensive.  If we're both on O2 they are effectively free.

we put my lad on O2 too, so any calls to me from his mobile are free. We'll do the same for my daughter when she goes to senior school.

So get an O2 PAYG SIM and put it in your current phone. A lot cheaper than buying an iPhone!
O2 will send you a PAYG SIM for free: O2 - Free SIM
And it seems you an get unlimited O2 to O2 calls if you top up £15 a month.

So just get an O2 sim then and stick it in your current phone.

I've just ordered an ipod touch (only 8gb  :-[  ) as it finally has the features I want and I really don't want the iPhone. I use my phone so infrequently that it doesn't make sense.

O2 delivered my iPhone yesterday, and I spent this morning updating the old iPhone with Firmware 2.0 and transferring my stuff to the new 3G iPhone.

It's the easiest phone transfer I've ever done.

Yet to test the GPS yet, one of the reasons I got the new iPhone was to use an emergency GPS for off route adventures on audax. However then I realised that if I went off route in an area without mobile coverage, the GPS wouldn't work as it couldn't download the maps  :-[

With the exception of 3G there's almost no difference between the old and new iPhone once you've updated the firmware, however the Chinese handwriting recognition rocks.
