…is a major factor in ill-health.
However, it isn't easy to find out what proportion of the viscera can (reasonably) safely be fatty tissue. There are guidelines for the overall proportion of body mass that can be fatty tissue, expressed as a percentage of body weight. I have found references to a "visceral fat rating", which is a number (no units) up to fifty nine. I'm suspicious of this, partly because it's mentioned on websites that are selling weighing scales.

Get a tape measure and measure your waist. Tape measures need carry no commercial baggage.
You will be carrying too much visceral fat if your waist is over 38"/96cm for a man.
Calculate your waist:hip ratio.

That is all.

Or, have a transverse CT scan done for another reason - it shows visceral fat very clearly. Apparently, I have a "normal" amount, whatever that is!

I suspect mine is low.
My waist:hip is 0.72 and I can easily feel my aorta if I lie on my back.

My scales give a visceral fat rating. I have no faith at all in that reading. My waist is 30-31" usually which is good enough for me.
