[HAMR] 5th April - Day 95
« on: 05 April, 2015, 07:49:17 am »
Well it would be most appropriate if today was the day that Steve resurrected his tracker and put some miles up, however that will no doubt be subject to his condition.

Go Steve, and Happy Easter

The first thing I did this morning was to check the tracker, but it is still showing a tent in Wellington. All good things come to those prepared to wait!

I hadn't realised until listening to his interview on thebikeshow.net that Steve had ridden around 20km after the accident, I thought it had happened in Wellington itself, but it was in Cullompton.

On further looking at the Strava, I can see that now. Quite amazing.

Apparently still waiting for the recumbent to be delivered and then they have to add reflective tape to make conform to UMCA spec. If only someone could lend him a recumbent trike in the mean time.

That option was there when I was asked questions last week.
Steve looked a bit sore and a week or so off will likely do him good.

"Straight back in in the summer" for a fresh attempt.

So the trike is a stopgap to retain fitness..?

Running both attempts concurrently so come December 31 Steve will hold the UMCA record for most miles in a year in the 40 to 49 age group and may even still beat the Tommy Godwin record plus he will be restarting in the summer to have another attempt to complete the full challenge without injury , or that's my interpretation .

That's pretty much my take on it, too.  By being able to log at least some miles while he's recovering, Steve can mitigate his losses. Otherwise, with every passing day he is losing 205 miles per day (average) to Tommy, which he will then have to make up, on top of his scheduled miles. If he can ride 50 miles a day, then he's losing 155/day instead; if he can ride 100, then he's losing "only" 105 to Tommy each day. I thought Hoppo explained it quite well in Friday's press release.

All in all a positive outcome, I'm glad Steve is going to continue.

In his interview he sounded as if it was the natural thing to do. Which it is for him, I suppose.

Out of interest, what is the UMCA spec, and how does it differ from RVLR?

Is he going to have to use a FLAG?

No idea of the UMCA spec other than what I read in another thread on YACF.

At the risk of sounding ghoulish, it's not inconceivable that something could happen to Tarzan down the line that puts him off the bike for a while too.

Anything could happen to anyone.

That is part and parcel of the risks, I guess.
