Kidderminster Killing Your Legs: 20th July

The picture says enough for this classic English audax.  Don't leave it too late to enter.  Not recommended to people who only like flat routes.

Hi Philip, a cracking ride Saturday that deserves some comment on YACF. The best bit was definitely the veg curry at the end, the hills were tough, the headwind on the way out along with a tubeless tyre blow out all contributed to a 13 hour ride and the car park was more than half full when I finished. No wonder you said lights were required. Not sure on the amount of climbing either, my Strava account registered 4,600m!! thanks again

POST – AUDAX ROUND UP.

I hope that the soreness in everyone’s legs is now abating after Saturday’s exertions.

What a day!   The weather was good despite the forecasts. There was a high turnout of starters and the events went smoothly.    Many thanks to those that heeded the car parking advice and rode to the HQ.  Whilst there were a large number of starters, we did experience an unusually high number of riders with mechanical problems causing some to abandon.   A small number did not turn-up on the day after an unfounded Whatsapp rumour that the Clee-to-Heaven route included Abdon Burf! A number of Clee to Heaven riders decided to go off-piste this year and attempt ‘The Incline’ up to the top of Abdon Burf.   Completely mad but I must say “chapeau”.

Developments for 2020:
•   Given the pressures on parking at Belbroughton Recreation Centre, the event next year will depart on a Sunday.  This will also guarantee quieter roads.
•   Given the queues experienced on the Kidderminster Killer at Acton Scott, the control for next year will-be-relocated to Carding Mill Valley.
•   Next year will see the launch of an additional ride, The Beacon Burns, deliberately targeted at riders who love a ridiculous challenge.  This 150km route will incorporate Worcestershire’s steepest hill, the 25% Wynniatts Way; Stamford Bank; Titterstone Clee summit and the relentless 20% ascent up ‘The Incline’ onto Abdon Burf.
•   From Clee to Heaven will be re-routed to avoid the main road out of Shatterford.

The Autumn South Salopian Audax – 5th October.
Controls: Belbroughton > Tenbury Wells > Bishops Castle > Ironbridge > Belbroughton
Voted upon by last year’s Autumn Audax riders, this event is nowhere near as hilly as either the Kidderminster Killer or From Clee to Heaven. Whilst not flat, it fails to achieve any Audax Altitude Award points, so you will be in for an easier day.  The only big summit is located at the northern end of the Long Mynd as you pass from Bishops Castle towards Ironbridge, though there are at least three short spiteful climbs en-route.
Details about the Autumn South Salopian can found at: http://beaconrcc.org.uk/audaxes/autumn-audax/  . Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/28781039
