I know the cambrian series of events , specifically say you can. But is it generally acceptable to ride a perm
other than from the listed start point?
Forgive me for asking but it saves me emailing several different promoters, asking what maybe a silly question. Just been flicking through the list of rides and theres several there, that all but pass my front door. But living in west wales , im always about as far away from the starting point as its possible to get.

You'll need to ask each organiser, there's no hard and fast rule.
Most will say yes, some may say 'you might not want to' because you'll struggle to find proof-of-passage at the wrong time of day in one of the control towns/villages, some may say no (and may not even give a reason).

You can start most perms from any control though its best to ask/advise the org, and most will allow you to start/finish at an interim point if thats convenient for you, i.e., the route passes near your train station which is not an control but you can use receipts to document start and finishing the ride from that point rather than ride down and back to the next official control.

Bear in mind that longer perms can have the start point and time designed around opening times of commercial controls later in the ride.

That reminds me I must initiate a couple of routes from my house as perms.

I ride the Anoraks Delight 200 from an Andover start rather than Pamber Heath. It's great being only 5 minutes from home at the finish, especially in winter when I was riding it for RRTY.
Getting nearer and nearer home as it goes darker and colder is preferable to riding past your house then further and further away.
Fortunately there are Cash-points at all the controls so time of day is not an issue.
PS. It's a lovely ride.

IIRC the form I had to complete to register my new perm said it should be possible for the rider to start at any control.

Mark Beauchamp is very flexible in this regard - Manotea and I rode it to/from Reading.

Are you having an ATM installed, or just leaving a stamp on the kitchen table?

I have one of Mike Wigley's Permenants (not yet ridden it for one reason or another) & the info specifically nominates which controls can be used as alternative start venues.Crystal clear & excellent :thumbsup:
As Hummers says it is best to consider the trading hours of the controls if not riding from the planned start.
My nearest/most convenient alternative start-control would impose a little time-related pressure :-\ so I may yet ride it as per PlanA.
