Can I suggest that you ask the British Cycling Hall of Fame to add your favourite long distance cyclist to their list?

Well OK, anything to oblige - but do you think BC will know who we mean by The Mighty Vorsprung?

I don't mean me.  People who have actually done some remarkable stuff and inspired us

George Berwick might be a good hall of fame person for example

Duly nominated - excellent idea, vorsprung.
It's a bit weird, but actually quite wonderful.

Would someone be able to tell those of us with a less encyclopedic knowledge of all things audax a little bit about Mr Berwick  ???

A quick google revealed the following:

2004 - got to a million Kilometres

http://ctcfifeandkinross.org.uk/newsletter/2004/Spring_2004.PDF

from the article:

Yes our own George “McNasty” Berwick has clocked up 1 million
kilometres in a lifetime of cycling. George admits that he didn’t
start counting until he was 18 so the true toll on his legs could be
considerably more.
Some of Georges notable achievements during his many, many
years in the saddle are -
Paris, Brest, Paris (1200 Km) in ‘79, ‘87, ‘91 & ‘99.
Aberdeen to Ardnamurchan and back (34.5 hours)
Scottish end to end record holder (Gretna to John ‘O Groats) from
1967 to 1992
Completed forty two 24 hour time trials with a personal best of 464
miles in 24 hours.

and loads of other stuff, including this:

Cheers for that GD:
Update - the Mighty McNasty is still going strong, 69 years young this month, now up to 17 Super Randonneur series, and completing his 50th 24 hour TT this year.
Here he is being driven round the Mersey Roads course in the lap of luxury:  ;D

He also features in at least one of Damon's videos of the event.
If you want to have a look at his audaxing record, (including a 51 point permanent) see the Auk website results pages, his member number is 553. But sit down with a cup of tea first..
It's a bit weird, but actually quite wonderful.

Mc Nasty also attempted the Lands End John O Groats record. He was behind schedule all the way to Edinburgh. Around Edinburgh, he devised a different route. When he had crossed the Firth of Forth, he was ahead of schedule. The End to End route was never the same again. ;D
He failed though. I think that bad weather played a part. Out of all the failures of attempted End to Ends, George got the furthest.

He's also extremely well known in the Rough Stuff Fellowship. Andy Wilkinson is one of George's biggest fans.
He knows Scotland better than anyone I've ever heard of. Not just the roads, but also the wild mountains.

Indeed he does. I had the honour of riding the Eightsome Reel 1500k perm with George a few years ago. There was no chance of getting lost riding with him.
Apart from once, on a minor road, he got the OS map out, unfolded it and started to study it through his magnifying glass - as we were riding along.  :o  ;D

It's a bit weird, but actually quite wonderful.

Thanks for this thread, it will be interesting to see all the nominations, not just the final 50.

I think that George Berwick is a great choice, and I have nominated Sheila Simpson and Mr. Abraham.

I used to really enjoy his (very) off-road articles in Cycling (Weakly) - many years ago.
