A maybe Invicta 600km next year
« on: 29 May, 2008, 12:18:23 am »
We are toying with the idea of a 600 event next year and I have had a quick play on Autoroute tonight and come up with a two lap 378km/222km.
Anyone got ideas for controls who may live more local to the control points? or better tweaks for the route  ;D it needs tweaking for more lanes anyway and I may even switch direction of lap two yet.

Otford 0km, [Church Hall]
Ewhurst 70km,  [Roadside control with refreshments]
 Alton 118km [supermarket]
Andover 175km [supermarket]
Westmeston area 309km ??
Otford 378km

lap two Otford [Church Hall]
Rye 446km [Cafe] ??
Hythe 482km [Cafe] ??
Elham 494km [Info or cafe]
Wingham 511km  [Info]
Sittingbourne 548km [Hall]
Hollingbourne 561km [info]
Otford 600.1km Church Hall

Opinions welcomed  ??? :)

As you well know, I really hate two lap routes.   Why not do a loop from Otford out east to the coast then looping clockwise along the coast to a suitable turning point in the west before looping north then back to Otford?

Alternatively, piss off the Dartford patrols by going over there and heading out to Clacton/etc

There's nothing at Westmeston apart from a few infos which I'm fast running out of for my event; There is a cafe in Ditchling just down the road which is cyclist friendly (Dolly's Pantry?)

I presume you are using the usual cafes in Rye and Hythe. Not that I'm riding it but two loops does look more daunting than on big one tracing the Kent and Sussex coasts as nutty suggests but I can see why you'd want to keep it as 2 from a control POV.

There are shops/ATMs in Hassocks that I use on my DIY permanent rides.

Dolly's Pantry is indeed the cafe in Ditchling, at the crossroads.  Rather fine crumpet, wot  ho ;)

Another option is a nature reserve that is just outside Ditchling (head out of town to the east and then north on a road towards Wivelsfield) - this is usually quieter.

Given the distance you propose to have Westmeston area, it is unlikely these cafes would be open.

I could be persuaded to open a MSH stylee feed control at Westmeston (well actually the bottom of Ditchling beacon but it would ensure they carried along Underhill lane); any idea of a date?

I think an Invicta SR is a great idea; has it been done before? I might even do it in 2011 to celebrate 10 years of Randonees.

What about 12 laps of the Invicta Grimpeur route?

I like the idea of two laps it makes the distance seem more managable apart from being more practical.

How's about  Rye, Deal,Sandwich,Wingham on the 2nd leg? Not sure how that would fit in distance wise.

I'll plug it in and see how it fits.
I might change the direction of the second loop as some faster riders might not want to sleep at 380km so the extra bit to Sittingbourne could be about right for sleep for them. also the control times might fit in better with available commercial controls.
 :)

Nutty I did the two lap route as in my opinion it is good to have a bag drop area for fresh clothes and sleep, the Denmead 600 has always worked well in this way, how about a one loop 600 using the ferry to France and a control in Calais  ;) :) would that be better  ;D

;D  That would be super evil 10800m of climbing for a 600  :o not only that the controls would be a nightmare and a brevet card the thickness of War & Peace  ;D

Adds to the climbing effort - all that extra weight.

Will these places be info controls? If not there's a nice cafe in Stockbridge, fairly nr Wherwell. There is also a garden centre cafe at Timsbury and a tea room at Kimbridge, both of which are 5* rated and very near to Mottisfont. Let me know if you need the details.

If you do run it I'll enter give you a wave as you ride past.

Hhhmmm....    A ride from the start to Portsmouth, ferry to Le Havre, ride to Calais, Ferry to Dover and ride back seems to be a possibility...

I'd be really up for an Invicta 600 - I like the Invicta rides.

Can we have the Windmill Hill - Boreham Street - Thingy rollercoaster section please?  :D

<VIZ style tip>

Note to organisers of 600s:

when planning a 'hall' type control for a possible sleep-stop, consider whether uncarpeted hardwood floors/walls are entirely the best thing for randonneurs seeking 40 winks whilst their comrades clomp about in cleated shoes.

there's a tea shop in Goodnestone, just up the road from Wingham (pron Gunstone - same shift as for Wednesday I suppose) what a relative of mine has something to do with, otoh she is pushing 80.

and my bro/cousins etc are scattered round Wingham

OK you can wake up now, the next comment contains no mention of my rellies.
I second Matt's comments.  On last year's Marlborough connection everyone had to leave their clumpy shoes outsied in the entranceway to protect the new floor.
Any fool can admire a mountain.  It takes real discernment to appreciate the fens.
