Non BRM 600km in Scotland - 25/26th June 2011
« on: 11 November, 2010, 09:09:06 am »
I've had the idea of a West Highland 600 in mind for a while and have identified this weekend for an "extra" 600km after the PBP qualifying window. The broad idea is a 400 + 200, starting from Ballachulish heading down to Campbeltown via Dalmally and back via Oban, then tagging on a 200 (probably the Port Navigation, but dependant on sabbath ferry times) the following day.

As it might be tricky to get this to work as a DIY (eg you cant get a stamp in Ballachulish until 7am when the co-op opens + Dalmally / Claonaig may be dubious)  I was thinking of putting this on as a basic BR 600 calendar event.

Can I guagae potential interet before going ahead?  I appreciate that by the end of June 2011 some folk will probably have had their fill of 600's.

The date is deliberately chosen to maximise daylight (it shouldnt get really dark at all) and for me at any rate will be followed by 3 non cycling weekends.

Ive never ridden either road on the Mull of Kintyre and am keen so to do.

Let me know.

Graeme.

Very interested. I was up for helping on the daylight, so I feel owed a pretty scottish trip (in a convoluted self-justified way!).

I can imagine woosing out and riding just the first 400, so it's nice to have the choice. (My 600 is the week before, so if I ride on the day I'll have to rule-out back-to-back 600s. but hopefully I'll ride it the week before).

YLG: Could you post a rough route outline - e.g. on Google-Maps? Or just post the controls so we could knock one up?

If the weather is good some people may want to ride thro the  few hours of twilight .   How does that work with the ferry to Mull.   Are you going for a midday start.

Obviously, the whole thing is dependant on the 2011 summer ferry timetable which isn’t available yet, however I was thinking of a traditional 6am start.

A 12 noon start wouldn’t work for slower riders as they could be within time at either Fishnish or Ardgour late at night / early hours but with no ferry service, so 12 noon is definitely a non starter.

Using the winter timetable as a guide there isn’t a ferry from Oban – Craignure before 10am on a Sunday so there would be very little advantage in getting round the first 400 in 17 hrs unless you wanted a very long sleep.  I’d expect riders to leave Ballachulish on day 2 around 6.30am in time to catch the 10am ferry in Oban.

A 6am start results in latest finish time of 10pm which ties in nicely with the last Corran Ferry at 9.30pm, but Id need to check the Fishnish – Lochaline link too (winter timetable has one at 16.00 and 16.45 which are within time but would again mean no advantage to fast riders in blasting the 70k from Craignure to Fishnish.  It would however make this quite a sociable bike ride, which was the feedback from when the P.N. 200 was run back in 2009.

It would be possible to run this as a “group DIY” and riders could have a free choice of start time, but that comes up against the challenge of the lack of suitable controls as info controls are OK on a calendar event but are verboten on a DIY.    Or it could be ridden as a GPS based DIY.

2nd loop - 188km
not sure what I've missed.

You missed the loop round Mull - comes out at 231km but they've including the ferry crossings in the total distance ::-)
It didn't look at all like that in the photographs

I'll probably do this unless Liz requires me to chaperone her on hols. I'm keen to try several 600s this year and I've already committed to doing a 600 RRTY so if anyone fancies a first one from Linlithgow to Campbeltown via Aberfeldy. I'm setting of at 7am this Sat the 13th Nov from the Cross or a wee bit earlier if I can get out of my bed in time. I'm not planning to stop for a sleep but may tak a bivvy bag just in case or stop in a hotel if the plan falls apart. Weather looks not too bad. Route has been OK'd by Eck but have still to send entry form.

:o I hope you've got your heated baffies all charged up.

Aye, it's 600.9km according to Autoroute. If you want to make it a wee bit longer, you don't have to come back down the M9. And I don't mind if your entry form is upside down, again.   ;)
It's a bit weird, but actually quite wonderful.

Hmmm. I like the sound of this. A midday start will ensure the busiest possible ride down glen coe.  I dont facny that. Whats the benefit of a midday start ?

Jim,
The short answer is upto about 42 hours (or 40 for some events, not this one). Of course many riders do it much quicker, but under 30hrs is unusual.

The more thorough answer is here:

They're doing a tour of small, intimate venues like Murrayfield.

I'm amazed that this thread has gone on for another page without anyone stopping to point out just how completely barking mad Bodach has become. If I'd say he's the new McNasty, except of course that we've still got the old one.
