Edit: Del with hair would be almost as amusing as Wow sans beard!Memory loss bobb? Already? :o See you tomorrow. ;)
I wonder if I could make this one. From where to where? Would driving to the start and then riding be appropriate? I am not a drinker but would make do with a coffee or three. The original plan was here (http://www.streetmap.co.uk/idmap.srf?x=587620&y=190620&z=120&sv=587620,190620&st=4&ar=Y&mapp=idmap.srf&searchp=ids.srf&lm=0) to here (http://www.streetmap.co.uk/idmap.srf?x=594425&y=192255&z=120&sv=594425,192255&st=4&ar=Y&mapp=idmap.srf&searchp=ids.srf&lm=0) and back to Southend. It's about an 18 mile round trip from my place. You'd be welcome to kip here if you wanted to.
The ride is tomorrow night. I'm excited. Two questions:1. I suggested the station but the first pub is not far away, clicky (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Unknown+road&daddr=51.58323,0.706934&hl=en&geocode=FUUTEwMdp7cKAA%3B&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=17&sll=51.582903,0.703887&sspn=0.004653,0.011104&ie=UTF8&ll=51.582975,0.706317&spn=0.004653,0.011104&z=17), being somwhere on North St. but before Weir Pond Rd.
1. When and where are we meeting?
2. Would it be appropriate for me to bring pickled eggs or have we moved on?
Oops, that's three questions. Sorry ;D

1(a) see 1.
2. I think we've moved on but YMMV.
(I will try to remember your pannier hooks)I forgot about those. In that case I'll get the eggs in.
There is a good chance that owing to a local commitment that afternoon, I shall be able to attend this.
Be gentle with me ::-)
Will a Brommie be okay for the distances between pubs?
Will a Brommie be okay for the distances between pubs?Very much Brommie country, with short distances, on flat and smooth roads. Might get to all of 10 miles.
Is david Hamilton Prime Minister yet? I think we should be told. He's forming a coalition with Sooty and Zippy as he doesn't want to be seen as a sock puppet.
Is david Hamilton Prime Minister yet? I think we should be told.
I'd say meet at the station. What train will you be on, OD?
Make that 2 Bromptons!I'll meet and greet, what time will you be there?
Can we meet at Rochford Station please?
Very much Brommie country, with short distances, on flat and smooth roads.Too much of that kind of statement will get your poetic licence revoked!!
How I regret being official baby-sitter tomorrow night and thus having to stay at home instead of coming out todrinkplay.
Careful, we don't want another case of this:
Couple took baby on 7 hour pub crawl | The Sun |News (http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article2082507.ece)
:P
Do you think the route is doable on a singlespeed? (Honest answers please...)We'll be cycling through Essex marshland! Max altitude will be something around 3 metres. ::-)

It'll be OK, Nutty looks nothing like the bloke pictured.
Anyhow, Santa will be present. What can go wrong?

Don't tempt fate - I can imagine the headlines now...
'Drunken gang of deviant cyclists lead by Santa lookalike take kid on South Essex pub crawl - kids Uncle launches inexplicable diatribe against the French and Apple when questioned'
"Yes, I'll be drinking grown up drinks which means I can't drive. Please can you both sit on the rack of a bicycle..." I think that would put me back in the dog house.
7 & 9 if my memory serves me.. I'm usually wrong* so give or take 18 months off of each of those ;D
* naughty uncle :-[
You misunderstand. Do they look old enough to be able to buy me a drink? We need an overcoat, a false beard, and a top circus acrobat to teach the kids to stand on each others shoulders. They'll both need to be trained otherwise the one on the bottom will get tired and cranky and annoy Uncle Nutty. ;)
I am riding down tonight. I may not make Rochford Station by 1930 hours. So therefore, where are you going after the station so I can catch you up.I think this'll be the pub route from the station, Clicky (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Unknown+road&daddr=Stambridge+Rd+to:Gore+Rd+to:Unknown+road+to:51.596588,0.804663&hl=en&geocode=FQQTEwMd6LcKAA%3BFXccEwMd1CILAA%3BFclfEwMd53ILAA%3BFUtmEwMdoucLAA%3B&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=4&sz=15&via=1,2,3&sll=51.595495,0.796981&sspn=0.018608,0.044417&ie=UTF8&ll=51.58923,0.766983&spn=0.074443,0.17767&z=13). I'll come back to find you if needed.
Plus, is there a nice route for getting from the Battlesbridge area to Rochford? I will probably come over North Hill, and thru Danbury.

This is probably the most pleasant route, Battlesbridge to Rochford. To use the barred route go straight on to Canewdon Rd. instead of heading south on Ashingdon. TR at Hyde Wood Lane. Google shows a break after the crossroads but the bridleway continues through that, beware the gates as they are surrounded by mud and you can't open the gates, you ride around them.
If your quite late it might be worth a ring to see where we are and maybe use this lane to get the second, or third, pub. Just follow it through and turn left on Stambridge Rd.
Thanks Del. Can you send me a map with an arrow so I can spot it on my OS map???Is this what you want, Clicky (http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?id=3583)? (suggest you toggle map sizes)
Or, with a few more details,
bikehike.co.uk - Course Creator (http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?id=3584)
takes you straight to the Golden Lion.
As Del says, there are two barriers to negotiate. The first, not far from a duck pond, I find is normally open in the hours of daylight, more likely to be closed after dark. You can negotiate this in one of two ways: there's a gap immediately to the left of it which is likely to be muddy; or you can turn and go through the stable yard, which is concreted. I used to use the latter all the time until some horsey woman objected to a cyclist in her private space, but you are quite unlikely to meet any horsey types after dark.
The second you can ride past, keeping it on your right, and then negotiate some bollards. In daylight, and while sober, you can ride through these with ease.
For much of the day, the Ashingdon road is an A road in all but name. It's narrow, busy, heavy lorries use it, there is a totally inadequate farcility first one side, then the other, and I hate it with a vengeance.
For the sake of an extra mile, you can have rural tranquillity - a little bit of north Essex that got lost.
Wow, are you getting the train to Rochford Station? ;D ;D ;D

Ah... that seems sensible (I don't know the area and wondered about the detour).
Have just driven home from ASDA along the seafront. The wind is getting up, the temperature is between 2°-3°c and the rain is coming down heavy and is getting a porridgy constistency that stayed on the side of the windscreen for a while. :-\
I am sitting at my desk in wet socks and undercrackers.

That wasn't the reaction I expected from you to a young man in a state of deshabille.
The sun always shines on our rides. Have you not noticed?
I just can't understand why you all seem to have this belief that I am a sex-crazed loon... ;D
Both barriers are now automatic and always closed. Fear not though as the first one you encounter has room either side to ride around. The last time I went through, about 3 weeks ago, it was less muddy on the near side, heading south. Even if they have built fences either side you'll be able to walk the bike under the bar, with only a little leaning and ducking.

Whoops! I hope OD can still change route plans, Clicky (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/essex/7846890.stm)!

It'll be fine! I am assuming there hasn't been more rain in the area so it should have drained away. I'll pack some Speedos just in case.

PS - which pubs did we visit? It all got a bit blurred and I can't remember ;D
How's the head OD? And don't forget what you promised - there were witnesses (and some photos, I think)! ;)

My head was surprisingly fine yesterday morning. Perhaps I have inadvertently stumbled over an excellent hangover cure: cycling, paracetamol plus rousing verses of "In the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia"
For the record, the Mother in Law remained unmolested, as did everyone else. I slept like a large piece of wood on Friday night. Some uncharitable souls suggested I passed out but they're just uncharitable >:(
What did I promise Reg? I am genuinely quaking in my kinky Endura neoprene over booties :o

I'm assuming that the 6th is too soon for people to organise the time what about the 27th. The 21st is the WARTY so pretty much rules out the 20th.
We are due another one.
Reg & I speculated about the Ferry Boat, North Fambridge, for a pootle. Easy rail access, food, real ale.
The Ferry Boat does sound good. I like the idea of food. Might prevent me from getting quite so wasted ;DBut will that be so entertaining for the rest of us? ;D ;D ;D

Hmmm.... a pub with rooms has certain attractions.... :demon:
;)
The 27th March would be fine for me. Don't really mind where we go, anything that involves bikes and pubs is just dandy.

Why waste money on beer then? :P
As for dates, I can make the 6th or the 20thI can do two dates, not the 20th though.
Just remembered - can't do the 6th. :-\Oh dear! That's naused it then! :(
Mark, I think you've missing the point, these rides aren't strenuous. I have no doubt whatsoever that you will be physically capable of taking part, irrespective of what you've just done!
I may or may not feel like tackling North Hill en-route (http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Witham-Battlesbridge-via-North-Hill). :-\We usually do it 2 to 3 times for a laugh and to build up a thirst. ;)

We will have to elect a lung picker upper and grit plucker though!
Hopefully the weather will be good as I refuse to go into The General's Arms again after they charged me 7 quid for a poxy sandwich. It will have to be someone else's round as I refuse to give them any of my money!!

I'll volunteer for this - so I can laugh at FB in distress every inch of the way! :demon: ;)
Assuming the next ride takes place on Friday 27th (hope it does) I have unwittingly organised a Hair of the Dog Ride (http://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=16468.0) the day after.A wise decision as I'm sure the good people of Mill Green have yet to hear you sing. I shall be attending the Viper as it is a very good venue.

Wow seems to have himself on the FNRttS. ???
Shall I expand my repertoire? I know one or two hymns. Perhaps we could offer the good people of Mill Green moral salvation?Only if we can't get to the bar should you start singing! :P That'll clear the place out and we'll have it to ourselves.

I need to ensure I am fully prepared in both mind and body. Therefore, may enquire whether we are we just hitting the one pub this time or is it another 6 pub extravaganza? I feel that the 6 pub plan was cruelly hidden from me last time. ;D

Could do more than one if you want. Last time I went through, the Norton in Cold Norton was closed. I may be having a pub lunch in East Hanningfield on Friday and may therefore be riding around for a bit before we meet. This is to be confirmed.
And indeed the 6-pub plan was neither cruel nor hidden. It was advertised in advance and you clearly enjoyed yourself like a newt.
Mmmm.... Hopefully I'll be able to make it. I really don't know the roads in that wrong part of the county, so the beer radar won't work!
All depends on what time I can leave work....
Do we have a seconder for my proposal of:-
Hurdlemakers (7.30)
Fox & Hounds (8.00)
The Bell (8.30)
Round Bush (9.00)
Ferry Boat (9.30)?
8.3 miles, 5 pubs, train back?

Tim, not sure when I'm leaving Witham. That nice Mr Oakden and I are riding down together and he is working out when he can leave. Meeting up with the rest of the gang at 7.30 to 8pm seems reasonable.

Hi OD,
I reserve judgement on riding back home, but how about this (out and back route) (http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Witham-Woodham-Mortimer-loop) for the route out from Witham to/from the Hurdlemakers?
I've mostly based it on a training loop I do fairly often, so I know most of the route pretty well (outbound as far as the A414, and the return from Woodham Walter). DISCLAIMER: Whilst this may sound like an offer to navigate, it in no way constitutes any acceptance of liability for getting lost, nor does it imply any warranty of surface quality, not-being-underwater-ness, quietness traffic-wise or even existence of the roads involved. Contents may have settled in transit. Route was constructed in an area where nuts are handled.(Was the last bit TMI?)
It's 10 miles out and just under 8 miles back.
I've routed it via
- the 750 yards (?) of sustrans path from Constance Close, since that'll be near to your mind today ;)
- North Hill (
characterthirst building)- a short stretch of the A414, which should be OK that time of night
I've avoided North Hill on the way back since I don't trust myself to descend it with beers on board. I've avoided the A414 stretch on the way back for similar reasons. I hope that "Tom Tit Lane" on the return leg isn't rhyming slang. The route also takes us past the international headquarters of "Worms Direct (http://www.wormsdirectuk.co.uk)", just in case.
There are a few options on the outbound route through hatfield Pev./Nounsley, depending if you feel like tackling a ford or not (route as posted avoids it).
Cheers,
Mark

Just working out a provisional plan - we could get the train from Bures to Witham, arriving around 1900, ride with you down to the Hurdlemakers and on to the Ferry Boat. Then stay overnight and ride home in the morning - there are no trains on Saturday.

from previous accounts I've read on this esteemed forum, I assumed that might be describing OD after 6 pubs, until I read as far as the "quiet" part.

OK, sounds like a plan. Do you want to come round to our house? I will PM my address if you do.

Greetings chap. That all looks fine with me. I will bring along Gertie the Garmin. I will load the Hurdlemakers and home so it can auto route to get us to the first pub and then home afterwards should we need help cos we're a bit "confused".
[Edit] just spotted the post from TimC. the plan now seems: they come round to mine at about 7pm , we swing by yours, we then follow you ;D PM me your address. The likelihood is that we will be at the Hurdlemakers a bit after 7:30. I can think of worse places to be marooned so I assume the rest of the gang will wait for us.
I shall be riding Son of Oscar, me new bike what I built. This will be his maiden voyage. Please can you cycle behind me with a dust pan and brush to sweep up bits as they fall off? ;D
(*) According to the metoffice site (http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/ee/maldon_forecast_weather.html) it'll beMetcheck is giving better weather, use that.

I'm going to pass this one up too. I don't think it's a good idea for me to go on a pub crawl - given my propensity to drink to excess - when I've been working towards putting in a respectable performance on a club time trail this weekend (my first, and also a big club event (http://www.eadt.co.uk/content/eadt/sport/general/story.aspx?brand=EADOnline&category=SportMisc&tBrand=EADOnline&tCategory=xDefault&itemid=IPED11%20Mar%202009%2011%3A05%3A44%3A270)).I'll quote it before he can change his mind.
Sorry guys - maybe next time!
[edit] ^^^I can hardly believe I wrote that!^^^ Maybe I'm growing up at last? ;)
Mrs. Wow and I have converted to Islam and will now be riding our tandem to Mecca instead.Going to bingo on her own now?
Actually, that's a lie and I'm intending to be at the Hurdlemakers for 7.30.
I've just booked accommodation at the Ferry Boat, so V and I will be there somehow! Still thinking about the logistics; bear with me...
You'll have a bear with you? :oThat'll work out OK. Mrs. Wow is at bingo so the bear can stoke.
You may call her that; I wouldn't dare! ;D
You may call her that; I wouldn't dare! ;DIf I turn up may I call her That or should I stick with Mrs. C until we know each other better?
She is unaware of this conversation, so the reaction might be, um, unpredictable! Don't worry, she's not very scary at all. Honest. So is That a Thai mail order bride? Best let us know now so we don't look shocked when we meet her.
TimC - please ask your undoubtedly lovely lady to be gentle with Del when he makes some Thai bride smart arsed remark. He is such a smashing chap and takes good photos. We need him in one piece so he can continue his duties as team snapper.
Everyone - I will not be joining you tomorrow night. I am not a happy chappie. Whilst trying to get into London by train last Saturday the bus I was travelling on ::-) >:( ::-) drove past The Hoop in Stock. It looked very good and I wondered if it could be the target for a subsequent ride. Anyone been there?
So you are about to organise another ride which you are not going to attend!
Unless the weather forecast turns a lot worse than it currently shows(*), then I'll still be riding over from Witham via the route upthread.
Cheers,
Mark

TimC, I hope you don't think I'm being rude about Mrs. C. :o Ordinarily I have to meet them first and even then it takes at least ten minutes for me to be rude about someone. Just ask the fat hairy bloke. :P
OD, I should be delighted be able to attend your EMERGENCY EFNRttP next week, and as I don't have any time trials or such like on next weekend, I will be back to drinking like a trooper! ;) April WARTY the day after isn't it?
I cannot even begin to describe how weally busy I am.
I feel that I must apologise to all EFNRttPers for the lack of pickled eggs during last nights meet :o :-[. I don't think that eggs, pickled or not, ever got a mention. :'(
So on behalf of EFNRttP riders past and future I am sorry. :-*
When I asked the barmaid about food, in the Ferry Boat, I actually thought about pickled eggs. Does that count?I very much doubt it.
...
Mark rolled up about 1955ish and complaining of cold hands experimented with fire.
Unfortunately it didn't work and probably made things worse. Still a bit of glue and thread should do the trick. And doesn't a burnt Gore Windstopper glove match so well with Rapha. ;):P
...
Still the night wasn't a total loss. Five of us got to take our bikes out and not just look longingly at them as they hang in the garage. ::-)
edit: picasa (http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/delthebike/Epnr0903#) pics now up.
Stop rubbing it in you git. I think the item on the top of the agenda for the next ride should be how to get Del a mail order Thai bride. He's clearly got a bit of a thing about them.I would like a small eastern woman, nothing wrong with that ::-). Having a bike hanging in the garage and not riding it is just weird! :P

It wasn't from choice. Right now I am helping install decking in our garden. Chances of riding me new bike this weekend are nil >:(It's a shame you back on to a cul de sac. We could have ridden by larfin' and pointin'. Then made good our escape. ;D

I fully endorse the Viper.
Devise your route then, and I'll join you somewhere near Chelmsford for the run to the pub!
As I work in Braintree I could just as well ride over to Witham after work and join you from the start, OD. Otherwise if I go from home I'd use a more direct route (for me) through Chelmsford and Writtle.
I could comfortably get there for 17:30.
Pickled egg pasta?
The EMERGENCY ride (barring accidents) is ONHeard that before! ::-)

For all those doubters out there here is proof that Son of Oscar is on the launch pad ready for tonight ...I can see the coat hanger under the bottom bracket just waiting to be hung back up again. :P
I see you PHD* is already fitted but I can't see the PED**.
Do you have anything which will tell you how much beer you've drunk?
*Pub Homing Device
**Pickled Egg Detector
Your new bike is looking good OD. I'll probably leave work some time between 16:30 and 17:00 and take a route through the Notleys to Witham.
I'm not fussy OD, whatever you fancy or is most convenient.
I am seriously looking forward to a pint of Jake The Snake later...
Is OD now a grand-dad?
Is OD now a grand-dad?
This has been troubling me. Son of Oscar strictly speaking is the fruit of Oscar the Orbea's loins as it was his bits that got transferred over to the new frame and thus SoO was born.
I thought about changing my YACF handle to Son of Oscar's Dad but thought it little too complex.
Frankly, I am surprised that this issue wasn't debated by the G20 Leaders. What's the world's economic crisis compared with my relationship with my evolving bicycles?
BetFred are offering evens that OD won't make it to the pub. They are also offering:
- 2/1 that he says the missus won't let him
- 3/1 that the cat dies and he claims he's overcome with grief and unable to cycle
- 4/1 he'll claim that a national shortage of pickled eggs meant that he had to stay at home furiously whipping up a batch in his kitchen
- 16/1 that he'll claim to have been abducted by aliens on the way to the ride, hence his non-appearance.
;D

I dunno... I think SOD suits you. ;D
After a cold, frosty breaths, morning and a warming afternoons riding I will not be at the Viper for the E-EFNRP. :( Nor will I see the young SOD in action. Going to rest and feed for the WARTY.
I recommend the V.I.P.A, Jake the Snake, and Oscar Wilde as fine beverages to consume at the Viper.
We were in the Square & Compasses earlier today and The Current Mrs R remarked that we should perhaps organise another Essex Friday Night Ride to the Pub - it was like hearing a nightingale sing!
I have a hankering to do one of these rides. But I wonder if my teetotallism makes them rather pointless! Or does the pub serve a good cup of tea? (is it the one at Hanningfield?)
This sounds like a very good idea.
Perhaps, in order to keep to the true spirit, as St. Simon of the Wounded Knee taught us, we should start on Friday but not get there until Saturday?

OH GOD! I walked into that one, didn't I? :-\ :-*
August!? I'll say yes now, Fuller Street Festival sounds like a right laugh. But you'll need to remind me nearer the time. August!? :PThere speaks a man who seems to be hankering after another pub outing somewhere in the intervening time. I'd certainly be up for one, August!? is, after all, practically next year ...
Can't do this Friday (12th). I'm heading into the big smoke for a bit of a shindig. 19th I'm heading up to Edinburgh for the weekend, and 26th I'm going to Bristol. July 3rd could be a goer then* - night before the Dun Run!
[Edit] If we take in the Leather Bottle at Blackmore, we could also stop at the Viper.
*I might as well just hold out 'til August! ::-)
That could work, this Saturday? Or any week night. We've got a friend staying over on Saturday, so that's out ... I can do Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week though. I have a slight preference for Wednesday (well, Mrs. O does actually).
Edit: Just remembered why Aug 7th was ringing bells. I've a BBQ to attend but no address as to where it is. If the address springs forth I'll be getting tinnies and E.Coli instead of hand pumped and jazz.
Come and get hand pumped and gizzed with us, you know it makes sense.
This is terrible. EFNRttP was never meant to clash with FNRttC. :(Leave Fuller St. at nine and head for HPC, plenty of time! ;D
Actually, that could be done, couldn't it?Certainly could, I suggest the Mercian.
I have had a meeting with Head Office and looked at the pub's website (http://www.thesquareandcompasses.co.uk/events.html) and wish to advance the following plan for consideration ...
On the opening night (Friday 7th August '09 in case you haven't been keeping up) the Ray Ward Trio will strike up at 7pm and the spit roast will also spark up at the same time. How about we assemble at 7pm? We will have Twinkle Toes the 9-year old with us who likes a good pub, in particular the S&C so feel free to bring your ankle bitters if you have them.
If anyone wants to meet at our place I can always lead us on a entertaining and circuitous route to Fuller Street.
How does this sound or has anyone got an even better idea?
Tokamak, subject to final sanctioning by the wifenfuhrer I'm up for this. She might even come too. Shall we meet twixt the walthams on Blasford Hill?
I'm probably doing an EFNRttP tomorrow, here (http://www.huntsmanandhounds.co.uk/). I'm going to test a tent and my ability to operate it.
Anyone who feels like a beer or two, and possibly bringing some canvas with them would be welcome. I'm going to leave home around 5 p.m., get there about 7 - 7.30, put the tent up, retire to the bar for food and drink and at a suitable juncture climb into my sleeping bag for the night. On Saturday morning I shall cycle home through the pissing rain for a good night's sleep.

That's an easy journey for a big 2-wheeled barrel of Stella to take! Home by 12.30.
We are sorry, we are not able to find any trains that match your journey details. There are some possible reasons below. Please try again.

Gracious me! I have been expending a great deal of effort in trying find you a Thai mail order bride. I haven't said anything as I wanted her to be a surprise. Are you telling me my efforts might be in vain? I suppose I could always slightly amend my search criteria. Please do carry on with the Thai mail order bride search. Something I forgot to mention.
In Cold Norton there is an ex-pub called The Norton, and featuring an ancient motorcycle on its pub sign. I was very sad a year or two ago to see the pub boarded up. However, there is good news! There was activity at the pub this morning, which appears to be the result of a community project to save the pub and work is clearly progressing well.
Save the Norton.org (http://www.savethenorton.org/index.php/home)
When it's open again, it's a must-do for an EFNRttP.
I was reading the most recent edition of the Cycling Plus were they went on a S24O which apparently stands for a Sub 24 hour Overnight (often wondered what it meant). Without realising we went on a S24O when we went to the Huntsman & Hounds. We might have to try and do another before the year is out.

... but also Ratsborough Farm, in Southminster, is worth a visit. No on-site pub (although there's one within a short walk and several others within a short ride) ...

Do you now have a very nasally accent? ;)

That's what I surmised. Crikey - there are people you'd take such exception to, but our Erron isn't one of them.

I was wearing skin tight jeans, and boots with a 2" heel - think that might have been the problem!
Bloody hell - the Stetson probably would have caused a riot.It could've been worse! You might have been on your way to a Rocky Horror Picture Show dressed a Frank 'n' Furter. ::-)
Yes, isn't it a pain relying on a train service ;)
Who's still on for tonight then, at the Fuller Street Beer Festival? In light of what happened last time I was at a festival, perhaps we should warn them of possible trouble? :P
I believe bobb is quite up for this one too. We'll aim to arrive for about 7pm.
Also my sister and family are staying and we're supposed to be having dinner tonight.Bar snacks and pickled eggs, show 'em the good life! ;) ;)

I wondered about this but since I'm known for my tact and discretion I didn't like to ask. I reckon it'll be something to do with either his pink stetson or his purple helmet.
My highlights then were, bumping into a girl I used to go to school with and hadn't seen in at least 14 years (and OD dropping unsubtle hints, trying to play the matchmaker ::-))
Can I be best man? I have plenty of material for the speech :P
Right that's it. I'm going to go down to the market today to see if I can actually buy one!
The hat pictured is not bobb's! It belongs to a lady friend of mine, and bobb wanted to try it on for size when we were all on a train back from Kent following my birthday celebrations last year - camping (it up) and attending a folk music concert in a church in Sandwich.
It's good of you to cover up for your friend. ;)
The man clearly covets such a hat and has now succumbed to this desire and is off to buy one. Good on him I say - at least we'll all be able to recognise him at Mildenhall in a few weeks time!
On arrival, I found out that the market is closed on a Monday >:(
I know just the stall though - the one where I bought my mirror shades for almost no money. They are now my cycling shades :) I will have a new magic hat in pink tomorrow though :P
Sounds like fun. Can I play?
It doesn't get any more last minute than this - but when I leave work some time imminently, I'm going to head straight for The Compasses Inn (http://www.compasseslittleygreen.co.uk/) in Littley Green. Although I cycle past it almost every day on my commute, I've never stopped there, so this will be rectified this evening! It used to be a Ridleys pub and was the closest to the Brewery. It is now owned by the Ridley family.

Look out for Simon Heffer, extreme right wing Telegraph (?) journalist, for whom this is a local. If you spill a pint of beer over him, I'll buy you two pints as a replacement.
The beer there is normally gravity drawn.
Thus, my plan is to bring a WAG with me.
Thus, my plan is to bring a WAG with me.
Won't they squabble?
NB: 30th Oct is FNRttC.
Whatever date I'll have to borrow a WAG for the evening 'cos OD has yet to get me a bride from the east. ::-)
Yes, I am an embarrassing failure in this regard - sorry.I forgive your lapse and will let you run my singles ad campaign for this EFNRttP. Keep it clean!

"The Essex Friday Night Ride to the Pub - so many men, so few women!"
Just had an idea (the first in 2009).
Why don't we all meet at Chelmsford rail station and cycle to The Viper at Mill Green for a few jars. We then head off towards Shenfield, stop at another pub along the way then have a curry when we get to Shenfield. We can then head off home by train.
Christmas cheer, pickled eggs and presents for poor children can be dispensed as we merrily pedal along.
What do we think?
... some piss head with a voracious appetite for beer will be going "Right! next pub!".
This Friday at The Norton: who's going? What's the plan etc?I should be there, WAGless! Ride, drink, ride.

So will I, Del. Shall we form a couple? It's either you or Regulator! :o
I think you'll look lovely together. I've always thought you were a match made in Heaven. If you get Wow to squint it doesn't count as getting me my Bride from the East!

And by the way, I have been underwhelmed by responses to my post regarding plans for the Christmas do. And I posted a picture of Wow and " a niece" to get you in the Xmas spirit. Am I to post yet more titillating photos in order to get a response? Surely not!I'm with bobb, just go to the Viper.

K.I.S.S.

PS - how do you get one of those little flaps into a post so you can put something naughty underneath?
I'm with bobb, just go to the Viper.

What, for din dins?
I'm not sure they serve grub in the evenings. Maybe I'll have to ride out there this arvo to find out :P
Is there a curry establishment within striking distance of The Viper? There's a place called Nirvana in Ingatestone, don't know if it's any good though as I just found it on google maps. Clicky (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=51.672848,0.38553&spn=0.006813,0.015428&z=16&iwloc=lyrftr:m,463442013833772708,51.671517,0.385809)

Bobb dear chap, I am now overwhelmed!!! A recce mission that that quality hasn't been seen since the D-Day landings. Sir, we salute you!
I liked all your ideas. After you have continued with your research why don't you hone down the options and present us with the best? I for one would be delighted to place myself entirely in quite clearly very capable hands

Noes! Don't make me organise it! I'm happy to do recces, but whenever I have to organise stuff I get so stressed out I end up on the edge of a nervous breakdown :'(
OK, I'll do more recces, list them, we have a vote, then you can book it and heard us all ;D
Once we have more routes/pubs, we should start a new thread so other people (Londonites/East Angularians etc) can be included if they want to come along. I'm looking forward to this work :)
Edit: Of course, other people can suggest things. I suppose our main criteria is that most people will be doing this train assisted (except for the nutters) so the start/finish should be main line/easy stations friendly.
I think you'll look lovely together. I've always thought you were a match made in Heaven.
I guess we will be departing Witham at around 1900 as well.
See you there

There's a very good chance I'll be able to join you on this one. Would that be 19:00 from your garage door?
Do you have a route in mind? Obviously the Stow Maries route (http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Witham-Stow-Maries) we did a couple of weeks back would be very easily adaptable - only about 12.5 miles IIRC.
... 1900 hrs round the back of ours would be most agreeable.
Yes, an adaptation of the Stow Maries route would be good. I have programmed the Garmin and it works out at 13.6 miles which sounds about right. The pace will be sedate as The Current Mrs R is still suffering from the exertions of Wednesday night - she really must get out more!

Did you plan on Hoe Mill Lock --> Woodham Walter --> Tom Tit Lane --> Woodham Mortimer --> Cock Clarks and down from there to Cold Norton? ISTR that on the Stow Maries ride, you remarked that the bit past the Hurdlemaker's wasn't the route you'd been thinking of that time.
(Or were you intending to subject your good lady wife to North Hill?)
I seem to have some extra photographs on my camera! ::-)
Perhaps next time? ::-)I seem to have some extra photographs on my camera! ::-)OD didn't take that to the loo as well did he? ;D
And how is OD's head this morning? It would be his bladder we should be
OD, I recce'd my two potential xmas routes more thoroughly yesterday. Do you wanna start its own thread?
A few things ...
Reg, taking the piss does come with responsibilities. I hope you will be making strenuous efforts to attend one of these gigs in the very near future (not that we have one organised of course). Better still, you need to be at our Christmas do. Then you can take the piss in person
Secondly, I forgot to thank Del for his photos. I'm not sure how you manage it but you always seem to capture the moment!
Thirdly, I mentioned a Suffolk eco pub with micro brewery and campsite on Friday night. This is it (http://www.edwardstonewhitehorse.co.uk/). I have dropped them an e-mail to see if their campsite is open in January for our proposed Sub 24 Hour Overnight. I will keep you posted and set up a separate thread at some point.
Good news! The campsite at The White Horse at Edwardstone is OPEN IN JANUARY!!! Is it worth my starting a new thread???

 We definitely need a "Who wants to freeze their bits off in January" thread.
Count me in.
This is a good idea. I need something to cheer me up.
Well, we could do something fairly mundane like meet at the White Hart, Margaretting Tye, or the Hoop, or maybe something more adventurous: train-assisted to Edwardstone (for example) and then cycle home after closing time?
I've got so many holidays coming up that dates might be difficult for me.
As I can't ride, what with having only one functioning arm, I'd be well up for a meet up at a pub in close proximity to a railway station/bus/taxi ride away etc....

The wonderful staff at Broomfield are already pissed off with me - I don't want to make it worse!!

Purely on the basis that I have never been to the White Hart I am more than happy to agree this is the destination for our next pub ride. I could ride to Chelmsford and get the train home.
What does everyone else think?
When is St George's Day?It's the Friday that Wow wants to go out. :P
You're forcing me to check my Early Learning Centre diary. It's the same day that King Charles II of England, Scotland and Ireland was crowned in Westminster Abbey, 1661.
You've clearly survived hibernation. Welcome back Del. I remember the Blue Peter team putting their tortorise in a straw filled box each year. Did you undergo the same process? Those Blue Peter bods have soft hands! :o
I've not been in there for a year or so, but the Green Dragon at Youngs End is/was very good.
We did ride past a "George and Dragon" pub/restaurant last Weds, just north of Kelvedon, but it looked a bit posh and restaurant-y for a bunch of sweaty cyclists to arrive at for one of these events.
I say chaps and ladies, the next ride is THIS FRIDAY , I've got my pass and I'm raring to go. Thus far the venue is the Green Dragon at Youngs End (near Braintree, CM77 8QN), the venue was chosen cos it's St George's Day. However, I personally don't mind a change of venue that suits people better.
Who's in?
Who's in?I could be in, expect me when you see me.
Oaky, we shall expect nothing less than full armour, shield and sword together with tame dragon.
My Lake SPD sandals have turned up.You should send them back. :o Mine haven't deformed at all. ::-)

I could easily get to The Green Dragon tomorrow evening so count me in. It's been a while since I've seen any of you guys!
Do keep up (http://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=235.msg597294#msg597294). ::-) :PSo young Tokamak how long have you had a cat? ;)
It's too cold for sandals today.

If it's cold I can always wear them with socks and my kinky neoprene rubber booties.
Oaky dear heart, should I meet you off the train in Witham or will you be getting off at Chelmsford? And, have you seen chief, is he coming too?

This one's easy:-I do believe that it's Wilf Lunn, crazy bike inventor.
OK I shall be setting off for the Green Dragon from Witham at 7:15-ish, depending on the whim of National Express East Anglia, naturally.
should be a good one :)

It will take less than an hour to get there.I'll stick with my original plan and head straight to the pub to save any unnecessary waiting.

It's gleaming like a shiny thing that's just been vigorously buffed.
Wow and I expect to get there before 6pm so will hang around aimlessly waiting for you lot.
We may eat our dinner before y'all arrive - or are you planning to eat when you get there? Or is it just drinking?

Yes, Peg Millar's, past Humphreys slaughterhouse then right at the T junction. This OK?

If we didn't have people waiting for us at The Green Dragon we could have popped into the Square and Compasses for a little rest.My route takes me past that pub. ::-)

Saint George (ca. 275/281 – 23 April 303) was, according to tradition, a Roman soldier and priest in the Guard of Diocletian, who is venerated as a Christian martyr. In hagiography Saint George is one of the most venerated saints in the Roman Catholic Church, Anglican Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, Oriental Orthodox Church, and the Eastern Catholic Churches. He is immortalized in the tale of Saint George and the Dragon and is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. His memorial is celebrated on 23 April, and he is regarded as one of the most prominent military saints.
Saint George is the patron saint of Aragon, Catalonia, England, Ethiopia, Georgia, Greece, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, and Russia, as well as the cities of Amersfoort, Beirut, Fakiha, Bteghrine, Cáceres (Spain), Ferrara, Freiburg, Genoa, Ljubljana, Gozo, Milan, Pomorie, Preston, Salford, Qormi, Rio de Janeiro, Lod, Barcelona and Moscow, as well as a wide range of professions, organizations, and disease sufferers.
Are you likely to be tired by the time you get there?Very tired, faint even, I may have to sit down! (especially if there are other bikes outside) ::-)

13.7 to be precise. Plus a badger that we chased down the road.
EDIT: on the way home, I felt a click from the chain area, so spent the last part of the journey trying hard not to stand up on the pedals in case t went ping. Inspection this morning shows that caution was definitely in order:-

That might explain the ticking sound I noticed earlier in the evening then... ???
I'll be in Denmark.
This thread took some finding as it looks like more than 12 whole months have elapsed since our last EFNRttP (with the exception of the Christmas do)
So might I suggest a plan? Before continuing I should point out that I have secured Oaky's permission to do some forward planning so please don't set the US Navy Seals on me for contravening the Geneva Convention on Doing Stuff at Short Notice.
Date and time: Friday 3rd June :o 1930hrs
Suggested rendezvous pub: Sportsman's Arms, Sportsman's Lane, Hatty Peverel, CM3 2NW
Suggested route: up North Hill stopping at The Rodney, The Generals Arms at the top of North Hill, then right by the pink house and down the hill to The Bell, then The Victoria and finally drop in on Wally at The Cats.
My Grade 4 CSE Maths tells me this is a 6 pub ride. And yes, I know what happened on the last 6 pub ride I attempted.
Thoughts folks?
By the way, The Current Mrs R is coming too  so hopefully some other wives, husbands, boy friends, girl friends, pets, life coaches, Thai mail order brides, inflatable companions or random strangers picked up along the way can make it.

I'm sure the Current Mrs. R will be delighted to b lumped in with that lot.
I'll not be out for this one - birthday dinner with the future Mrs H, and already have one pass for the weekend to do Tomsk's saturday ride :)
Just a reminder ...
IT'S THIS FRIDAY!!!

Bring her with you! It will be a birthday she'll remember for years to come!!!
Hey chaps, sounds like fun. I might have got out were it not for some essential maintenance work I needed to complete on my racing bike (fitting new tubular tyres). I'm sure old hands could have made a quick job of it, but it's quite fiddly and I didn't want to stuff it up so I took my time. On the plus side, I did set a new PB for 10 miles on Saturday - 22:06, probably wouldn't have managed that if I'd been out on the razzle with you lot! :P
Does anyone fancy a Paglesham Run repeat? It could involve camping at Wallasea Island, if required. There are also campsites and pubs in the Southminster area.
https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=10.msg74536#msg74536
Quite a while ago, but it was very good.
Well, I went out yesterday and came back today.
59 mile round trip to Ratsborough Farm, Southminster.
It's a good camp site and the Essex Boys could do worse than to take tents there on a Friday evening, do the Southminster pubs (there's quite a few) and then bugger off to the Roundbush for a 10 a.m. breakfast of pickled egg & bacon.
My Essex Friday Night Ride to the Pub on 5th July will involve arriving at the said pub on the Saturday morning (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=69858.0).You'll have to pedal a lot faster to do both rides! ;)

I need cheering up (5hit day at work) so my thoughts have turned to forward planning ...I'll join you to drink my tap water and tea!
Friday 5th July.
Who fancies joining me on a ride around Colchester ticking off some pubs in the Good Beer Guide? And, as me and Huggy can attest, those nice people at The Victoria Inn let you bring takeaways (ample local choice) into their boozer. They even provide crockery and cutlery on the understanding you'll be sinking lots of beer (other drinks are available). If there's going to be a few of us they asked that we phone them beforehand, which I'm happy to do.

Sorry I can't make it - another private view at the Aubrey Gallery on 5th - just their summer exhibition featuring a few of mine...

Sadly, or not so sadly, I will be doing all of those things but in Yorkshire.
Pretty sure I'll join ye!

Hmmm. Cider eh? Reminds me of times spent at Norwich Beer Festival. Be careful drinking that stuff. If it's got bits in BEWARE. You'll turn in to a wierdy beardy and take to wearing dead animals on our head and living in the woods.
OD only does that at weekends.
7.15 at the Albert tonight?
Monday has so far failed to excite my interest and as I am working from home some forward planning has taken place.I see you're doing the really bonkers NCN1 bit through the woodland/nettly path between Layer de la Haye and Maldon Road, Colchester. If I ride the other way to see you I'll take the main road bit as the NCN is hopeless at that point. I may have to confer by phone to make sure I don't miss you on that short diversion!
I propose our target unvisited (by me) Good Beer Guide pubs are:
The Fat Cat (65 Butt Road, CO3 3BZ) - "Well established free house with guest ales mainly from East Anglia ... well chosen Belgian specialities"
The New Inn (36 Chapel Street South, CO2 7AX) - "Traditional two-bar back street local that has been transformed into a free house, offering mainly ales from local micros and a fine selection of malt whiskies ... a library :o ... dogs welcome in the public bar"
In a few days time, once I have a handle on numbers, I will phone the Victoria Inn to ensure they are aware we would like to eat curry and drink (lots of) beer, plus possible pots of tea, in their lovely pub (as endorsed by me and Huggy).
I also have a proposed route (http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=571389) from Witham. It largely follows NCN1 including the slightly muddy bike path round the back of the zoo. This is the section shown as a straight line. There are alternatives. For the return journey we can either jump on a train or follow the A12 cycle lane or do something entirely different.
What do we think?
I have already once had the pleasure of the relevant NCN section.
I will not be taking any of my ROAD bikes anywhere near it!
I've only just noticed mention of a curry.
When is this? Is it after the pubs? Before?
I might be up for a curry!!

Excellent. I would suggest the following is required to ensure the evening is one of resounding success:
1. Yourself
2. A decent lock
3. A sense of adventure
Am I to assume you're going to go through Layer-de-la-Haye if you're not doing the NCN1 off-road bit, or are you taking the other, main road through Heckfordbridge (not as nice)?
3. a route that uses roads
as per one part of the discussion last night: http://www.thepoke.co.uk/2013/07/03/chickens-that-look-like-andy-murray/

Pubs ;D
The forward planning Friday night ride enables me an ideal short trek after work to join up with you lot of fine ale appreciators. There will be no disaster if I miss my last train at 10.45 pm as I will be left with only 20k ride home.I'm sure you can DIY that into a 200 ;D
24th clashes with the penultimate game of the season for my volleyball team. Even without that, I'm not sure how logistics with a Colchester night out would have worked. From what I have gathered working out how to get home is best done after the curry and several beers ;D
Sounds like a dormant tradition is being reinvigorated though, so hopefully I'll be able to make a future incarnation.
My hope is that we will tour the remaining unvisited 2013 Good Beer Guide pubs in Colchester: Bricklayers, British Grenadier, Live and Let Live and New Town Tavern followed by a curry, hopefully at the Victoria.
... the touted ruby comes earlier in the eve?
We were hoping to join in the fun but I am just too knackered after an all night trip back from Madrid courtesy of EasyJet. I know I suffer sleep deprivation on Audax but this seems worse.
