Title: Saris Bones 3
Post by: Hammerman on 15 April, 2015, 10:29:29 am
Hi all, I'm thinking of getting a Bones 3 rack for my car and was wondering if anyone here has one and if it'll carry a tandem. Said tandem is a Trek T1000. It's fairly long so I know I'll have to take the wheels off. I usually transport it around in my van but I'm limited then to how many passengers I can carry. By getting this, or another brand you can recommend, 4 of us can go for a day. 2 solos and our tandem. Saves on fuel costs.
Thanks
Hammerma

I have no experience with this model, but I highly recommend the Pendle tandem roof rack. I tend to prefer roof racks over rear racks. Your treasured bikes are better protected from road dirt on a roof rack.

Thanks for the reply, but as I will rarely carry the tandem on the car, a tandem specific rack is expensive. Was thinking of getting a rear rack as my son is insured on the car and can drop me and Mrs H off at imes for mini tours. Also if I get a3 bike rack was hoping the tandem would fit, then we could take another couple with us and only use one car

I have a Saris Bones 3, although I haven't used it that much.  My car's a Skoda Roomster, which has a near vertical tailgate.  With two solos and a kiddy bike, the rack tends to pull away from the back window unless the straps are REALLY tight due to the geometry of the thing.  With a sloping rear window this issue may not be so bad, but then the bikes are going to bang into each other.

I'd be very wary of adding any more weight than 3 solos - although with the wheels off the tandem that might not be so bad.

If you can afford it, a towball mounted rack would be a much better option in my opinion.
