It has been my impression that Glaswegians were fatter than many for as long as I can remember. The deep-fried Mars bar must be more than an urban myth...

Alcohol inhibits the metabolising of fat. That's why it's hard to drink and lose weight - it's not just the calories in booze. There's loads on the net about it. Here's one article .....

The Fattening Effects of Alcohol

Doesn't make sense to me. Drunks have neither the time, the money nor the inclination for food.

"There is no question that alcohol is one of the most fattening substances that a person can consume."

Don't think that the writer has ever been in re-hab - I've never seen a fat alcoholic.

Yeah, but as you know, there is a difference between an alcholic and someone who has 2 glasses of wine every night and goes out at the weekend and drinks lots of mixed drinks. Although, I would think the main problem is the sugary things you have with them like coke and lemonade and the loss of inhibition about eating three bags of crisps in the evening.

I read somewhere that alcohol increases feelings of appetite by decreasing the feeling of fullness in the stomach, and also can inhibit the working of the valve-thingamajig at the top of the stomach.
