Lovely.  I had some ornamental cabbages once.  I wasn't keen at first, bit they carried on being pretty.
Getting there...

Do they last all winter?  I could put some in my front border.  I think they're lovely, there were some in the garden centre the other week.

Today I was cycling through the New Forest and came across what I later learned  was called a 'drift'. New Forest ponies, which can roam freely for 364 days a year, are rounded up so that such tasks as worming, branding and tail-clipping can take place. The ponies are rounded up by people on horseback, and driven to a pound. There was lots of waiting around, then 10 seconds of furious activity while people try funnel the stampeding ponies towards the pound. Some of the ponies object to being funnelled into the pound, and make a bid for freedom. This woman is bravely trying to redirect a couple of tons of scared-out-of-its-wits lasagna horseflesh back towards the pound. She survived.

I was pleased with this at iso 5000 when it was too dark to focus an 85 f2 lens on a rangefinder, then I saw an iso6400 colour pic from some current fuji nearby on the web:) Hey Ho, I like the MM

Leica Monochrom, 2/85 lens at f2, 1/60th iso 5000, almost no noise reduction

TimC,
Looks like the start of a sci-fi adventure.

Trip to the garden centre today. As you can see, I was inspired.

Is it sacrilege to post material from Topgear here?

Don't tell anyone, but I think TG is actually rather amusing.

Anyhoo, back to the photos.  I've spent my weekend smudging for the Feminism in London conference, as organised by amongst others, my beautiful cohab.  There's a whole Flickr account for the photos, and here's some of my favourites:

Did you actually have decent lighting for the speakers or have to import your own? Most of the conferences I have been photographing at require careful setup of gridded flash beforehand to get anythign like that without washing out the screen

Tried that on previous events and it generally, it pisses people off.

These were all made with a 70-200mm at f/2.8 and ISO1600 on my D700. As ever, the ambient light sucked rocks, so a combination of careful framing, VR and a wall to brace myself against let me shoot down to slowish speeds.

Conference I did last month was similar, mostly at f2.8, choose framing carefully and get the timing right. Flash spooks speakers* and annoys audiences. A conference photographer should be not seen or heard.

*Camila Batmanghelidjh would have stopped speaking and frozen. Same effect from the noise of a camera.

Yeah, I realise I've got a hand thing going on there. But I am having treatment for it.

Fortunately you had well lit rooms. Most of what I have done has had the speaker in near darkness. A gridded flash (very gridded) into a light sink (ie a bunch of black curtains) is relatively discreet *if* you haven't got the lighting to shoot with (if you don't mind sillouettes of speakers then that is fine.)

Then again science conferences are different.

I tend to take the view that if there is enough light for the audience to see then there is enough light to get shots. Unless you need glossy colour magazine quality.
