He was the standout player! His grandfather started the Pipe Band 40 years ago.

Also from our holidays was this.  Getting closer and closer to our cottage I suddenly started getting a bit nervous about being up on a hill, holding a metal tripod.

This one didn't knock out the power but this one BELOW did (turn up the volume on your PC before playing this...it may give you an indication of how close it was to us... and the mains power).

That will be thunder and lightning then <<<< Clicky for video

Eeek!  That was quite close enough, thanks.  Many years ago, I saw lightning hit about 10 metres from where I was, and I fell over backwards in shock, but I was indoors, looking out the window at the time...

Lucky.  Chum of mine nearly got struck while watching a storm from a couple of km off.  He was holding up a steel-shafted brolly, and his GF noticed a blue glow growing up out of the spike. He got rid, but his arm tingled for a couple of days afterwards.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

Thanks :)

I'm not too good on identifying - my favourite is the shouting birds, what are they? I'm pretty sure the three are Eider Ducks? Not sure about the others! (apart from the Typhoon!)

The shouting birds are Skuas, but I only know because I showed your pictures to a friend who's an excellent birdspotter.

Apparently Jaded's are Great Skuas - also known as Bonxies.  It's gaelic.  They get a bit nasty if you get too close to their nests.

Herdy!

I just love this one.  If I'd taken that, I'd have a dirty great print of it on the wall.  I keep trying similar ones with cat noses, I think getting the 85/1.8 has helped the chances of getting it right, as has my improving knowledge of getting the best out of the A7Rii's complex focusing modes.  Cats being their usual awkward selves doesn't help, though.

They are digging up the orad to reline one of the water mains (as is typical here, there are several down the road and the paperwork describing which house is connected to which one is somewhat ancient and lacks accuracy)

Why? This is a 5 inch main, and a good part after 100 years in the ground. The more scaly parts are very much sclerosed. They are scraping out the scale and painting the inside with epoxy to preserve it for longer.

Where these chinks have been lifted out to allow access for the cleaning process they have replaced them with nice coated ductile iron pipes.

The stub on the right is a capped off old 4" lead pipe.

Then it is time to get the air out.

"Don't take any pictures of that - the boss will have me for leaving it that far open"
After slowing down the water flow the air came out.

Apparently the epoxy cures in 20 secs. They heat it then run it into a spray head which is dragged through the pipe by a tractor at a constant rate, enough to get a ca 1mm coating on the inside of the cleaned pipe. This was a branch main off one of the 8 inch ones. Good job all round.
