It took until there were but 6-odd km to go, but the diesel engines have finally put in an appearance.

Dan Martin, at least once called Dean Martin by Jens Voigt, apparently has engines plural, which is surely cheating.

I'm wondering why I have a high tolerance of TMS commentary where cake and many other OT things are discussed, but the same isn't true with the TdF commentary.
Perhaps its because at least for part of the time they are describing what is going on.

A TMS/TdF crossover would be wonderful. I'd love to hear Blowers let loose on the French race.

I think TMS are lucky in that there are times when nothing is happening, which gives them freedom to talk about the cakes (and buses going past, and cheeses, during the last Test) that people have sent. Whereas, technically, the cycle race is always on. Maybe we should start sending Phil and Paul cakes and cheese to break up the repetition. Yes, I know the Seine goes through Paris, and if I didn't, you've already told me three times.

It's good to know that Little Tommy Voeckler has got a post-cycling career as either a hospital porter or an aerodynamicist all sewn up.  After all, Phil told us last night how proficient he is at pulling his 'gurneys'.  :D

Is Little Tommy Voeckler the Plucky Jacky Durand de nos jours?

I rather think he is, though he's been a bit subdued so far this year.

Watching on NBC Sports right now, it seems that the Phil & Paul show is their (NBC's) own production, not ITV4's. Phil & Paul often refer to NBC, discuss events with NBC commentators here in the USA, and deliver sponsors' messages. Maybe obvious to some, but news to me!

On the ITV4 coverage Phil has just1 asked "Steve" who he's been talking to now, which suggests that:
  • Someone at Vsquared was a bit tardy in cutting to the blipverts, or
  • Phil's been enjoying his lunch a bit more than might be deemed proper

'Steve' is NBC's roving reporter who gets around the teams, generally at the finish line.

Interesting with the weather today which seems to have had the Terrible Twosome imploring us to look at the way the leaders are descending while we were treated to pictures of Pyrenees from the helichopter, with nary a bike in sight.

At one point a lighting strike at the finish took out the commentary comms silencing C & S. Whoever took over from the studio was MUCH better.

So after a laborious explanation of why the helichopters are unable to come in close, we promptly get some nice close shots from a helichopter.  Followed by a longer shot from a helichopter showing another helichopter some way below the first.

Terrific scenery though

I guess Big Hail is a bad thing for Helis too.

Have you learned a new word today, Paul?

Why, yes!  Yes, I have!  Today's word is "firepower".  F-I-R-E-P-O-W-E-R.  Firepower.

Also Phil keeps calling the Garmin rider in the break "Christian Koran", which is so bad it's good.

It's great that Cummings won today.
I bet that he's got a real turbo diesel albeit not a V8 twin turbo ..........

Most of their heavy-duty diesels appear to be straight sixes.  However:

Quote
Cummins and Nissan recently announced the availability of the Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel engine in the next generation Nissan Titan. More details about the engine and its availability will be announced in the future. Stay tuned for more exciting news.

So he might have one which has recently crept out of the back door of the factory.

Also from Paul yesterday, as Sky were keeping the break in check: "Sky orchestrating manoeuvres there at the front'.  I quite liked that.

Since at stumps today Greipel has won three stages to Cavendish's one I put it to you, Phil, that the race's best sprinter was very much involved in today's stage.

How many times do we need to hear Pauls' opinion that Greipel is in the form of his life?
