Can some local person advise me on a route from Peterborough to Mildenhall please ? Avoiding very busy roads but still staying reasonable direct.

That'll mean venturing into the fens. Are you sure you wouldn't rather risk the A1 and the A14?  ;D

Using Google Maps with "Avoid highways" gives you a pretty direct route without using the above roads. If you want to get on even smaller roads the route will become very twisty indeed.

Google maps did that for me, are those A roads OK for cycling on. Last time I rode round there it was after 9pm on a Saturday and they were quiet. I shall be riding on a Friday afternoon.

here is my modified version, is it any better ?

What about this route - based on Mildenhall 300k route from Chatteris.

that looks like a nice route - when are you riding over? I could intersect you mid-way and help get you lost over the 2nd half..

The A142 from Sutton to Ely will have a timetrial on it on the Saturday morning - you may not want to get mixed up with it.

Your previous route was OK. but go through Littleport instead of round it on the A10. It's quicker and safer.

Littleport to Mildenhall is the route I'll be riding.
If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is...

I am thinking of getting a train to Peterborough that arrives at 14:09 on the Friday. I'll be thrilled to get a posse together on the way

Alternatively get the train to Cambridge (1h) and cycle from there - much quicker.  But you won't get as many miles in.

Edit: or to Ely and cycle from there.

Could do but with reservations required for bike it becomes more of a pain in'tharse. Me want the miles anyway. This time last year I would have considered riding all the way 280km, well OK this time last year I was planning on being in France but you know what I mean.

Can I ( as a VERY ) local lad, offer this alternative ?

I hope you sent it to Annie or you'll end up near the ablutions, and you know what skool ablutions are like, while everyone else is in Shangri La down by the woods.

If you pick a laney route, I'd make sure you have one or more of the following:

A GPS
A detailed route sheet
A good map
At least three days rations

Navigating fenland back roads can be a bugger - they never go in the direction you want them to.

This is me you're talking to. I have navigated from Peterborough to Cambridge at night via some back roads, across the USA including an afternoon in Michigan with no roadsigns. I'll hopefully have  a routesheet from Chatteris and a map and my MSeries Intuition. No GPS though, where is the challenge in that. I'll leave a trail of breadcrumbs in case I get lost so I can then find my way back to the station

Send to me with cheque made out to organisers.

So far The Wows have sent theirs, as has Luke.

Will do!  I notice the rally web-site says 50% of the camping capacity has already been booked.  Have you 'block booked' a section already?  If not, it might be worth giving them a ring to reserve some space.
