Biggies for 2019/20
« on: 14 August, 2017, 09:51:16 am »
The Mille Pennines thread recently had me thinking about big calendar rides for next season.

Does anyone know what's out there for next year that's 600 or over ?

So far there's Mille Pennines & a 1K Tomsk ride starting in Essex ... any others ?

Anything in Europe is also of interest !

You could look further afield of course. Japan will have a 1200 next year and the USA run several 1200s each year. The LRM calendar won't be out till October or November. The international ACP calendar is likely to be out in November.

Borders of Belgium runs on even years. I think they will also be running the rondom Luxemburg again from Maastricht. Both 1000BRM

This is on my short list for next year: https://sites.google.com/site/ciclofachiro2/home/giro-delle-repubbliche-marinare
Hopefully won't be as hot as 999 miles south of Rome, even if the driving is of the same standard.

Also mulling over the idea of a DIY attempt on this: http://baj.audax-saitama.org/home/home-en but not got to grips with the logistics of this yet - maybe spring 2019 is more realistic target, if it doesn't run as a calendar event then (no reply to my email asking about this).

Wow - the Japanese ride looks good. If you catch the season right you'd be following the blossom going north too I guess.

Interesting - but pricey to get there.

H-B-K-H looks most likely for me (so far).

mainly cos of this bar-chart. How many events have these??

Over 1200km of flat - that's roughly a PBP!

[The Not-in-Luxembourg 1000 looks nice too, but not if there's only going to be 9 riders! Maybe when it's had time to grow.]

Borders of Belgium was jolly nice - I'd recommend that to anyone with really fat tyres.

I heard the Dutch randonneurs will organise Merselo - Verona (1200km) again in 2018; @Ivo will know all about this. The first/last edition of this brevet was in 2014.

Norway had three 1000km brevets in 2017 (two from Kristiansand and one from Stavanger) and I would assume these will be available in 2018 as well.

http://www.randonneurs.bc.ca/VanIsle1200.html might be running again next year. Having done a 400 on Vancouver Island a couple of years ago, I can recommend both the area and the locals.

There will be at least one French 1200 LRM next year.

I'd be tempted again, and I reckon I could get a decent VC167 posse - I'll let you know in case we can get a decent deal on the Hull ferry.

Is there any info in English about the Japanese 1200 anywhere?

I've got a pass for a week's cycling in Japan - I was planning on riding some of the the Japanese oddesy route but this could be a good alternative.

Recommended. For me it turned into the Borders of Belgium 500k, but it has a lot going for it - no language problems most of the time cycle-friendly country (just knock on any door and ask for water, I did this quite a few times and there's no hesitation in filling your bottles). It's easy to get to, lots of places to stay nearby (we booked an AirBnB place for a few days before and afterwards). Very well organised. I did, and wrote about in Arrivee, a 600k in Belgium, which seems to to me to be the spiritual home of audax. I've ridden more k on the continent than in the UK in the past year or so. Living in the south-east makes this easier but so does being a member of the metropolitan liberal international elite, obvs.
Besides, it wouldn't be audacious if success were guaranteed.

Give us a couple of days to tease out something. The original information was via Micky. There might be a couple of 1200s to choose from.

I've heard somewhere the Irish might be running the Mile Failte 1200, but this is unconfirmed.

Unconfirmed insofar as John O'Sullivan (the organiser) says it's on again, but I don't think there's anything in writing or on the interweb yet.

(ETA Audax Ireland's high heid honcho1 Paul O'Donoghue has also said it's on in 2018, and that's on Facebook, so it must be true.)

1: Well, committee member. Though I'm sure he used to be chair, or el presidente, or something. Because Audax Ireland is *all* about the impressive titles.

I was thinking about this until I just did the Round Luxemburg ride. Once I've had some time to recover I will probably be more positive about another 1000
