Produced as a concept bike for a cycle show. As long as it gets press coverage, job's a good 'un.

Specialized regularly does concept bikes too.

It isn't meant to be ridden, only photographed. Some show bikes are rideable, this one isn't.

I quite like that, but then I was riding at the time it was produced (at a guess 1979/1980). I think context needs to be considered when classifying a bike as fugly.
It would be improved by putting some air in the tyres.

People who didn't understand leverage thought it eliminated the 'dead spots' at top and bottom dead centre. This enriched those companies making L-shaped and curved cranks. That sentence is the point of the cranks.

but surely the lever is from pedal to BB, the same regardless of fancy shaped cranks? So all it does is add material (and coolness and a corner to possibly fracture at, oh and of course £$)? Those cranks also look very long, but maybe that's just the photo.

*I wished I'd realised in the past, at school, that physics could be interesting and useful. I suppose I could always blame my teachers.

You understand correctly.

Don't know about the length. It is possible they made the long bit of the L a normal crank length I suppose. All depends how they intended the pseudo-scientific marketing diagrams to look. They wouldn't have been able to make it much longer, because the engineers would be well aware it had to work reasonably too.
