Every DDR traffic police officer was issued with a baton for directing traffic, white sleeves for visibility, a gun in case of encountering Westernised anti-social elements, and a capacious satchel for receiving bribes.

A colleague of mine in Stuttgart spent 2 years there for applying to leave the DDR.

With apologies to Brecht...

After the catwalk show of the 17th of June
The Secretary of the Policemens' Union
Had leaflets distributed on the Stalinallee
Which stated that the tailors
Had squandered the confidence of the government
And could only win it back
By re-tailoring the sleeves. Would it not in that case
Be simpler for the government
To dissolve the tailors
And elect others?
