Accommodation wanted in Edinburgh - short term
« on: 16 April, 2010, 07:56:44 pm »
My bathroom is rotting away thanks to a huge leak from the flat upstairs. The whole bathroom has to come out, be dried out, rebuilt and put back together. It's been going on for months, because my insurance company are a nightmare. See threads passim.

Anyway, we're nearly agreeing on a settlement and I need to start getting somewhere else to live. My current flat is in the southside and I wouldn't like to be too far away, as here is convenient, but at this stage I'm begging and therefore can't choose.

Trouble is, I don't know how long I need to move out for. Until my bathroom is out, we don't know how much needs to be done or how long it will take. It might be as little as 3 weeks, it might be 2 or 3 months. So ideally I'm looking to take somewhere for 3 weeks then renew week by week if required. Doesn't have to be fancy, or even nice, just has to have no hole in the ceiling and a floor you can walk on without falling through. I'm hoping that my contractors will be able to start within the next couple of weeks, but that's negotiable and will depend on me having somewhere to go.

I can provide references and a deposit but owing to difficulties reaching a settlement with the scummy insurance company, can't pay an awful lot - £500pcm would be about the max. I'm a cooncil worker, have my own flat to return to, am reliable, honest, a cyclist and anth, Ariadne, YACF Ecosse and er, Hummers can vouch for my integrity as a human being.

Can you help? If you can, or you know someone who can, please let me know. Thank you.

Your tone implies that you think this is a bad thing? O:-)

I'd offer you accommodation like a shot, Kirst, but I think Essex my be a little further south than you had in mind.

I would be more than happy to have you as my Scottish mail order bride for a few weeks but it would be a hell of a commute for you.

I'm on holiday for the first 2 weeks in May.  If you want to flat-sit in Liverpool it's free..

I used to live in Liverpool. It's a bit too far though. And I'd probably need it for more than two weeks.

I remember you saying you'd spent time in Liverpool, one reason I offered...... I can lend you a tent...is there a park nearby ?  You've said before you get on well with the tramp community....

You need to get your employer to send you on a long residential training course, or volunteer to teach one somewhere..

Just a thought:  University accommodation should be emptying out shortly.   Any possibilities there?

University accommodation was just what I was thinking, too.
   Summer flats, self-catering accommodation

Or how about this site.

Bloody hell, have you seen the prices?

Alistair was round today. He says they might be able to take the bathroom out and just put in enough of a false floor and leave me a toilet so I could stay here if need be, and just wash at the kitchen sink.  :-\ I could shower at the gym at the end of the street a couple of times a week, I suppose. We do have showers at work but they haven't been run often enough and now we can't use them because of legionella. I think what's making it so horrendous is the just not knowing how long it's all going to take - if I knew it would be a week or ten days, I could live with it, but knowing it could be anything from three weeks to three months makes it harder to decide.

We feel your pain, Kirst. Due to flooding from the flat above Woolly and I were without a kitchen for an entire year (we survived on microwave meals, takeaways and eating at my work) and without a bathroom for a lot of time, too. It did help that our landlady was good enough to let us live rent-free for much of this year.

Good luck.

So that's a party to trash your flat before you hand it over to the builders...

A housewarming party at the temporary flat...

A party to celebrate leaving the temporary flat..

And a soapy bathroom party to celebrate your return  :D

Glad to hear you're sorted. I asked one of my dads friends if he had anywhere suitable. As his flats are in Glasgow and full, the answer was no.
