AAA rechargeable batteries
« on: 20 October, 2008, 07:47:50 pm »
The rechargeable cells in my (BT) DECT phones are only 550 mAh and I had some (Maplin) 900 mAh cells in my battery bag, so I thought I'd do a swap and be able to use my phone a bit longer between charging, but they are just a little too long and won't fit without tremendous force.

Are there standard dimensions for these things?
How can I know if any replacement battery I buy will fit?

The size is supposed to be standard.

I have a BT cordless phone that some AAA batteries can be a tight squeeze in as well.  Vapex NiMH 1000 mAh ones go in with a firm push.  I have some others that fit normally: "Titanium PowPower 1000" - which I don't suppose are available any more with a silly name like that.

On a similar note, the rechargeable batteries in my cordless phones need replacing.
They're 700mAh AAs.

They don't last long enough for my liking.
The charger unit supplies 300mA according to its label.

So the question is, can I put higher capacity NiMH cells in the phones instead?

That way I can take my older NiMH cells that I use for the kids games and torches out of circulation and replace them with high capacity cells for my bike lights and put the batteries from my bike lights into the kids toys.

As far as I can see everyone wins, providing the base station  "charger" won't bork NiMH cells

It won't bork 'em.  At worst the charger won't fully charge cells that have a higher capacity than expected if it just uses a timer, and then you would have to use a separate charger.  But more likely it will stop charging when the battery is full, whatever the capacity.

I use higher capacity cells than my system is designed for - with no problems.

I find many high-capacity NiMHs are slightly oversized.

Do you know of any high-capacity NiMH cells that are not oversized or am I asking for the moon?

I've got in front of me, 7DayShop 1000mAh and Hama brand 1000mAh, both seem to measure 10mm x 44-and-a-fagpaper - ie within the size quoted on Wikithingy.
[edit] and Panasonic Infinium - same size, lower capacity but a good choice if you want a very long 'standby time'.
I've also got Vapex (mentioned up-thread) but they seem rubbish to me (probably forgeries).

[predictive reply] I strongly recommend 7DayShop branded cells

Well, that's not much use for someone wheelchair-bound from MS, is it?

I have in the past bought from Replacement and rechargeable batteries for alarms, cameras, laptops and more from the Battery Company UK .  Last time I got batteries for somebody at work and simply looked up the DECT phone model and bought their offering. Seemed easier than repeat buying different brands of battery until one fittted.

May be worth a look.

I had excellent service last week from batteryfarm, from whom I bought some LR44 button cells. They're an ebay Power Seller but postage was very reasonable.

My original point was that Maplin high capacity AAAs (which I happened to have anyway) did not fit into my DECT phone. I'll probably just keep using the originals for now.

I had the same problem with Maplin AA's not fitting in my Cateye light.
Do not clench. It only makes it worse.

Trying a Cateye LD600, which is also a tight fit lengthways for many AAAs,
don't fit: 7dayshop 1000mAh, Vapex Instant (800 longlife), GP Recyko (800 longlife)
do fit: Vanson 750 mAh, Uniross 900 mAh

Yes.

Dunno, coz they're at home and I'm not.  A bit of Google-Fu suggests 1000mAh, thobut.

Be careful.  The charging circuits in DECT phones may not charge the higher rated batteries properly.

This company recomends 800mAh for phones (but not the 1100mAh)
