[LEL17] Tracking John Spooner
« on: 03 August, 2017, 03:40:10 pm »
Not sure how many people know but John Spooner is the only person to have ridden every edition of LEL. I have just checked his tracking page and it says he is out of time.

Come on John I am rooting for you

Aye, -1h09.  On PBP they don't mind too much if you can make it up, but that's a bit much.  Here's hoping for a strong northerly.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

-1.09 means he's below the 12kph average, he was at Louth at 13.17 and has until 0830 tomorrow to do the remaining 244km, assuming he's not left without checking out

(I think)

About time we offered less rigid time limits to 'experienced' riders who still have the desire and endurance to complete the long rides, but maybe lack a bit of the pace of their former glory years (naming no names, not just thinking of El Salvatore here). In Italy , for example, for the 999 Miglia (Miles) (1600km) Ride recently there were two choices of deadline - one was 10.66kph and the slower one 9.52kph. if you missed the 150 hours limit you could still get a medal for the 168 hour limit.
(I entered for the slower pace and finished in 161 hours)

So 2013 we were on the edge of our seats to see if the elliptigo made it in on time, this year it's a pair of sandals along with a dodgy back wheel

Come on John!

Did you see this in t'other thread?

Salvatore arrived at Pocklington with 3 minutes to spare on a wheel with replaced spokes 'which might not last' according to the mechanic who fixed it. The weather is not looking too helpful (20mph winds, more at his head than his tail) and I don't know how he's doing with sleep. At this rate 'our' hope of completing 10 LEL's between us ( ;) must be in doubt. I had similar doubts this time 4 years ago that he'd make it but he pulled through, and if anyone can judge his efforts to the minute then he can, but it might be a close run thing. Or his wheel may collapse. Coincidentally 4 years ago I was riding with miniog when his spokes started going and he had to ditch at Barton.

ETA
and this too
The mechanic at Thirsk told me my rear wheel was only good for one thing, riding to the bike shop to buy a new one. He even said 'It's only a bike ride' and suggested the wheel was likely to collapse underneath me at any  time, and I would be mad to continue.

Well it's got me as far as Pocklington without mishap.

Fingers (and spokes) crossed.

By the by - Mr Larrington did offer to give me a lift down to Thirsk once BC closed, just especially to confuse Salvatore.  But I thought I'd best respect Salvatore's request that I restrain myself to the one control this time.  Plus also we had clearing up to do...

Anyone in Louth know how the wheel was holding up?

I don't think they are enforcing any intermediate control opening closing times on LEL; as long as there's a control there they will scan you through. All that matters is the finish time.

On PBP 2007 they allowed an extra 2 hours beyond the control closing time but were very insistent that the finish time was 90 hrs (or whatever time you were on) they said it was due to the 3 middle controls (Tinteniac Loudeiac and Carhaix) being completely swamped due to the rain and were taking a lot longer to process riders. Also riders might be taking sleep stops at other controls / bus shelters etc

Despite saying you had to make up the time I know of one UK rider who was late due to the usual loss of mental function and was quietly validated an hour out of time

and another who definitely wasn't after arriving 2 hrs OOT

talking of OOT I know a rider who just wanted the medal and was not worried about finishing in the time limit (sadly now DNF) is there an "hors delai" maximum time after which you don't even get a medal? (I understand the PBP one has HD engraved on it or maybe nothing)

The Finnish-Molotov Manoeuvre played in the nick of time.

Oh, and good luck, too.

No big deal. Really it isn't.

LEL can now be added to the list of rides I've packed on, a distinguished list including PBP, WCW, HBK, Lejog and others.

Nuncio, there's still time for you to make a comeback and make it 10.

Now on my way to Loughton.

I've packed on rides to work and to the local before now....

Have fun touring back.  I'll look forward to encountering you again somewhere, maybe even at a control desk.
