Title: Cerakote?
Post by: LittleWheelsandBig on 05 November, 2021, 10:26:13 pm
I am getting tired of paint and powdercoat not staying on bike frames. We often travel with our bikes (in normal times) and I am too lazy or time-pressed to always pack them immaculately.

Cerakote looks to be just about bombproof and thin enough to show off frame details. There are even clear coat options. Of course there is the usual hitch of needing a bit more dosh than the local powdercoater charges but that is life.

Has anybody had their bike Cerakoted? How much and where did you get it done?

Funnily enough I’ve run across this again being used to repaint cameras. Looks really good when done well and is supposed to be very hard wearing. Avoids the rubbing off of traditional ‘Leica black paint’ (I know that’s a look, but one I’d rather avoid…)

Common with guns as well.

Was looking at this today and wondering how it would compare to the powdercoat options. Hadn't spotted the clear coat options and will be interesting to see what the powder coaters say about this compared to the clear lacquer. Will let you know if they come back with anything...

Hi, quick update I spoke to the powdercoaters that I have been using to do a few frames and they said that the Cerakote would be too thin and would get rust spots through it quicker than the powdercoat options. I think the clear coats are possible but have gone for something more durable. Would be interested to hear how you get on if you do go for the cerakote though or hear otherwise about it?

Is this the stuff they spray on exhaust headers?

Yes, high temperature resistance.

Cerakote is an ultra-thin coating and supposedly is one of the best of the ultrathin coatings with regards to corrosion resistance. It has high impact and abrasion resistance too.

I have not found a worthwhile direct corrosion resistance comparison between powder coating and Cerakote.

Bump, for news of forumite experiences.

Looking at getting a few of HK’s and my bikes and trikes done. Some nearby applicators are:
