It does look very good. One thing that puts me off the UK 1000s is the use of multiple loops. These are deprecated by ACP.

Just because, or they think they have valid reasoning?

Because it increases the temptation to pack. As also routes that pass close to the finish at some point.

If you want to ride the thousand, you ride the route that the organiser has prepared or not ride or find another 1000 that meets your requirements.  Yes, multiple loops are harder; we had a pretty tough time on the New Forest 1000, but it was a great ride put on by the organiser (John Ward) and was just a case of getting your head together and go out there and turn the peddles each time you came back to the central control.

I think on all long rides no matter what the route is, there is always the temptation to pack, but it's up to the rider which choice they take.  The Sydney Melbourne Alpine was a straight out 1200, plenty of people packed; 60 started and 30 finished!

As John and Mr UN Dulates show, a loopy ride allows a small team to offer a lot of support on a long ride.

I appreciate the reasons. In any case a lot of ACP's recommendations are frequently ignored, here and in France. Nevertheless, the subject of this thread does look like a stunning event.

Glad it's not just me that feels that way about loops!

If I hadn't just done PBP I'd want to do this, it sounds wonderful.

Long straight tunnel (D1091, mid-map) closed 22:00-06:00 each day.

Gonna haveta MTFU to reach Briançon early,  or go offroading - it's a sodding long detour they suggest ;D

When people say "getting to the start line is the hard part", I wonder if this is what they mean ...

...or routes such as LEL that pass my house twice!

Pat, this thread is nothing without photos.  Have a good ride.

Say hello to the Lautaret for me: http://www.greenbank.org/alex/DSCF0063.JPG

Haven't done to descent to Briançon but the climb up from Bourg d'Oisans is lovely.
