Seems to have turned SW on the A422 towards Buckingham, and possibly Marsh Gibbon.

Trace begins on A5.  Are cyclists allowed on 4-lane dual carriageway in the UK?  They aren't here.

Yes, so long as it isn't a motorway and doesn't specifically exclude them like some tunnels.

Like the A3, for example.

He's diverted to Hook Norton !

Or maybe he's planning to make a gesture at Clarkson's house.

A tad speculative so soon into the ride!  :P

I hope he's not heading for Stow-on-the-Wold.  I heard that the wind blows cold there.

Duly noted, ta.

I had a gander at the A5 there and blenched.  I've ridden a couple of similar stretches here and once been told to bugger off out of it at the next exit.

Try the A14. There are even nice cyclist markings for getting you across oncoming slip roads.
It is simpler than it looks.

The bit north of MK isn't too bad (for a major A road anyway). And it's not dualled there either - not past Old Stratford where it re-joins the route of the old Watling Street.

Our 2012 Strasbourg-Perpignan route was royally buggered up because of a short stretch of 2x2 carriageway on our way out of Besançon. When we took the alternative, carefully checked on Streetview, we went straight into major roadworks. At night, natch.

Dontcha love Audax?

There are minor roads round here which are nastier than some of the major A roads in quieter parts of the country.

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/idld.srf?X=588620&Y=188625&A=Y&Z=120&lm=1 is really unpleasant most of the time and I have mostly stopped riding on it.

And indeed, some of the A-roads are a real surprise. We rode on the A5 with Teethgrinder on an AUK Dinner Dart from his place to That Wales, and it was fine. We've also ridden a good chunk of the A4, and that too was fine - wide, flat, good sight lines, not too much traffic (Reading notwithstanding - that was a mare).

Did the A4 from Newbury to Slough in the early hours of a Sunday morning with von Broad otp.  Garry sportingly kept waiting for me every time I nearly fell asleep but apart from that, and Reading, it was OK and only about a mile longer than the lanesy routesheet way.

Big chunks of the A406 are forbidden to bikes these days.

It was actually von Broad's idea, hatched in the petrol station shop at Membury Services, but I happily went along with it as I'd started nodding off at the wheel before even reaching Malmesbury.  But yes, Severn Across 2007 :-)
