value this laptop
« on: 07 May, 2008, 05:20:12 pm »
My friend has just got a new laptop and wants to shift his old one. It's completely rammed with rubbish, so will need re-formatting and probably doesn't have the original software. The spec is;
Sony Vaio PCG-FR415M
- 2.8 GHz P4
- 512MB ram
- 40Gb hard disk
- 15" LCD screen
- ATI Radeon IGP 345M
- size; not small, not light either
- The X key is missing, but it's possible to push the remaining stub
- No battery

Anyhow, what do you reckon it's worth?

Nothing.

£25 if you can find someone who CBA fixing the keyboard, installing Linux and using it as a desktop.

With no battery - close to zero.

Doesn't it still work if you plug it to the mains? If so it's still usable as a desktop PC.

eBay it "as is", or find a battery and key on there (there might be a completely dead Vaio for sale) and use it, or sell it for a bit more cash.

I got it in exhange for an old bike I gave him some time back! I knew that bike would come in handy one day!

New question though, does anyone know how to get a key/ID off a laptop with windows installed?

As in the thing you need to enter when installing windows.

Basically, is there a legal way to use the key for a copy that's legal and already there?

If the copy is legal and already there then  there'll be a label with the number on the machine.

Try re-installing Win using this; if it won't accept it then phone the MS helpline and they'll generate a new key for you.

Or you could stick Ubuntu on  it :)
