Tubeless tyre loses seal with rim, fix?

Slightly ot but whats the consensus on tubes with sealant in them, wether factory installed or put in by the owner? Or is it the same as tubeless, works sometimes but not always?

TERRIBLE!  Tried it for rims that were not suitable for conversion or bodge.  It was aweful, worst of both worlds. Dont do it.

Slime (much thicker) does work, but when it doesnt its also a mess to deal with. As noted it does impact ride quality so only really worth it when its a bike that has challenges to repair (rider not capable of on road repair or on heavy cargo bikes). For most situations its much better to buy quality tyres and maintain them (i.e. remove and imbedded sharp bits regularly)

Is this a flaw with the hookless rims beloved of the wheel manufacturers to save a few pounds at manufacture? (i.e. the bead going up against the rim hook would be far more likely to seal?

What rims are you using, what tyres & size are you using? Are the rims definitely tubeless ready, as this sounds like an issue that you’d have with running tubeless with incompatible rims.

I’ve never had this issue with tubeless, both hooked and hookless. Probably points to a bad for with the rim, and / or too loose a tyre bead.

Maybe you need to re-wrap your tubeless tape with an extra layer?
Some tyres are prone to stretching at the bead, especially if removed and remounted often.

If you do have hookless rims, you should only be using hookless compatible tubeless tyres, which is a relatively small subset of all tubeless tyres. Giant for example publish a list of approved tyres they’ve tested with their rims as safe, and imo you’d be mad not to run something on that list.

Works sometimes, until it doesn't, and now you have schmoo everywhere and your repair patch won't stick.

Like tubeless, it's more inclined to work on lower pressure high-volume tyres.  Also like tubeless, some care should be taken when topping up so as not to clog the valve.

Personally, I'd only use them for tyres where a puncture means abandoning the ride.  Eg. for a disabled rider who can't fix punctures, or maybe a folding bike.
