BT Home Hub Printer woes

DHCP works just fine in general. I think you have a layer1 issue. Duff cable or not plugged in properly.

How so if it's merrily printing off David's computer upstairs as I type?

Are there nay other switches or routers on your home network apart from the BT Homehub ?

What's the IP address of Davids PC and can you ping it from yours ?

Home network is:

phone master socket-> Home Hub-> David's Mac 192.168.1.64 (ethernet), Printer ethernet, my upstairs PC (ethernet), David's old Mac (ethernet)
Wirelessly connected to hub are this netbook (192.168.1.67) and a collection of laptops and David's iPad connect wirelessly intermittently (all off at present).

I don't know anything about pinging.

Is your Vista laptop wireless or ethernet ?
Now you have restarted the printer what does it say about its IP address form the printer menu ?

Vista laptop is wireless (off at present).
Printer is invisible from here on either BT Broadband Help or Homehub's home page...

HP LaserJet 5100. Manufactured 2002.

Try a cold reset on the printer which will reset all config back to factory defaults.

Turn the printer off.

Hold down the green "go" button and whilst keeping it held down turn the printer on again.
Keep the go button pressed until the display says "cold reset" then release it.

The printer will boot and then display "offline". Hit the go button again and it will go online. Give it a minute to DHCP etc then see if it now has an IP address on the 192.168.x.x range.

Just found this post after encountering similar problems with my new BT Home Hub 3.

Basically, my printer (a Brother HL-2250DN) is wired to the hub, but I coudn't print to it. The hub also couldn't see the printer, but my Mac could see it (in "Add new printer").

My solution was to delete the printer from the Mac, then perform a factory reset of the printer (you'll need to check your printer's manual). The hub could then see the printer, and I was able to add it as a new printer to the Mac in the usual way.

Through lack of information, I can only assume that the old hub (Virgin Media Superhub), used a different subnet mask to BT's home hub and the printer was unable to change and a factory reset forced it to rescan the entire network.

Hopefully this will work whatever printer and operation system you're using.
