Gary Lockwood & Keir Dullea on Radio 3 now.    It's 2hrs, 40 mins,  they had an interval.

I'm not a big fan of 2001,  but I found that R3 prog really interesting!

(perhaps because it was actually 45mins long,  not 2h40 ;)     )

Random factoid that MattC did not know:
right up until post-production, it was intended to have a voice-over explaining all the technology on screen.

Oh it’s shame they didn’t do that.  Then Kubrick could have brought out a Director’s Cut a decade later without the voiceover and with a few deleted scenes restored.  We would have all acclaimed it as a masterpiece apart from a few die-hards that claim that Deckard is not a Replicant Hal was much better with the voiceover   ;D

Someone should do a mashmixup thingy - put Harrison Ford's voiceover onto 2001.

Leonard Rossiter, doing a "Rigsby", even better. I have a bit of an issue with him NOT being Rigsby in 2001.
Some people say I'm self-obsessed but that's enough about them.

I rewatched Mission Impossible 4. I saw it in the cinema when it came out. I'd forgotten 90% of the plot of the film. I don't know if plots are getting more complicated and less memorable, or if my mind is going.

CA$H on TV this week. Nice French comedy thriller about con artists. Lots of double crossing.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Fury. What a load of old spanners. Think of every WW2 film cliche you can think of, it's in there. Really, really dreadful and stupid and corny and gruesome and daft. Shocking. Even the very first scene, no spoilers, a lone horseman rides through a desolate battlefield and gets leaped on and stabbed repeatedly in the face chest neck and head, then his killer strokes the horse. What a bloody stupid film. Shia La Beef didn't change his undercrackers for the three months it took to film so he could feel affinity with tank crews, they could have filmed his skiddy pants and it would have been better than this film.

Atonement

Hmmm. A well made, well acted film, undoubtedly, but I wasn't convinced by the relationship between Cecilia and Robbie. Nor that there was a point to that admittedly impressive tracking shot beyond being an impressive tracking shot.

Quartet.

No plot and no ending, and not a lot in between.
It is simpler than it looks.

The Black Sea.

Fast paced film about greed and an old submarine.  There is a hint of the allegorical about it so best not be too picky over whether stuff is possible!  Otherwise, gripping, suspenseful action with bit of a twist in the middle followed by a not too unpredictable ending.  Excellent performance from Jude Law. Not in the same league as Das Boot but recommended.

Car 19.

Bloke trying to save his relationship breaks his parole (?) and flies to South Africa.

Picks up his rental and realizes it is the wrong one. After phone faffage with the rental co. he decides to take it anyway. He then discovers in the following order- a CrackBerry in the glove box. A loaded, silenced pistol under the passenger seat and a hostage in the boot.

Cue police chases and shoot outs and dead people and the hero saving the day and getting the bad guy shafted.

The hero later dies in a car crash in L.A.

I wish there were a way of not spoiling the plot, and/or ending for people.

It's a play on real life events, not the movie. The lead (a gentleman actor, Paul Walker, popular for his roles in the similar car-chasing-and-car-racing Fast & Furious franchise) died for real in a car crash in LA. Passenger in a Porsche that hit a lamp post at 80 mph plus. Real life is harsher than the movies.

OTOH I can save my hard-earned by not watching it now..

Not the first time I've posted in this thread about that film.

The dinner scene. Oh man, that never gets old.  :D. "Will somebody please pass the fucking Asparagus?"

Casino Royale (the Craig version) in between dozing on the sofa.

Still a good film,  doesn't seem quite so revolutionary now, of course. I'd forgotten a couple of nice digs at Bond cliches:
Bond Girl names - he pretends to Vesper that her cover is "Stephanie Broadchest"
Martinis - a barman asks him "shaken or stirred sir?" "I don't give a damn."

Was told about the hola plug in for Chrome /Firefox , that allows you to set what country you want to be in. Installed it, and now have access to US Netflix, so a lot more films and TV to watch.

Watched Snowpiercer. Can't decide if I liked it or not, as I worked out the plot quite early on. Lots of big UK stars, and a big American and Korean star, but the movie was reportedly buried for political reasons, and was straight to video in America.
It's a cross between a prison break movie, environmental disaster movie, and a call for social justice set on a fast moving train.

New Hobbit film.

Its not the book, but as a film it is great fun, big battle scenes, love, dragons, wizards, elves, nasty orcs, great brain off entertainment. thoroughly enjoyed it.

The Devil's Backbone - recommended by someone here (probably tiermat but the search is rubbish). Excellent film, thanks.

Also John Dies at the End pretty good for a comedy/sci-fi, a lot of fun to watch. Not sure why I've not heard of it before - found it after watching Bubba Ho-Tep, another mysteriously obscure but wackily good film. Oh and
