Excellent creepy film about dealing with grief.  Quite tense in parts. Well worth watching.

Albert Nobbs. Amazing performance from Glenn Close.

Bob Le Flambeur

Classic 50s French gangster movie by Melville, arguably the first Nouvelle Vague film - not as polished as Rififi but that's kind of the point. Looks rather dated now but worth sticking with for the finale, and just what I was in the mood for on a lazy summer saturday afternoon.

Bottle Rocket
Wes Anderson's first film, with first roles for the Wilson brothers (Owen and Luke).

It doesn't have the budget to indulge in Anderson's usual whimsies, but does hit the mark as a slightly offbeat crime caper.  It does have the now familiar Anderson characterisations of a central outsider who influences a more sensible foil despite clearly being deluded, and his general conceit of a plan that is not matched by the execution, and a love interest that is ambiguous and uncertain.

It's a film that hinted at some talent, without being that memorable on the whole.

Given I bought every Anderson film from Amazon (DVDs are silly cheap at the moment, £3 or less a pop) I suspect I will now watch his ouvre in chronological order.  So next up, Rushmore methinks.

Sunday: Marvellous

Lovely, uplifting film, and a good antidote to

Saturday: Selma

which was also excellent.

27 is the age Rock/Pop stars die.  She's part of the infamous "27 Club".

meh... as I believe is said.

There's probably a 52 club as well.

I don't want to join any club that would have me as a member.

Rushmore
This really is a fab little film, which just engages through charm and lightness of touch.  Max Fischer is a great creation, played pitch perfect by Jason Schwartzman.  Strong supporting cast too.

I would pay good money to see Heaven and Hell.

Next up in my Wes Anderson adventures: Royal Tanenbaums.

Rush

Probably already mentioned. Entertaining, but maybe a movie by numbers. Seemed a little 2 dimensional to me, overly simplified or boiled down, caricature-ish.. Still, as I say, good entertainment. That said, the real story itself was dramatic, larger than life, so the film could, ironically, stay relatively accurate.

Just to help avoid confusion, Rushmore is not a sequel to Rush.

Well of course it wasn't - Rushmore came out first.

The Royal Tenenbaums
Another mighty fine film directed by Wes Anderson and featuring many of his ensemble cast.  A whimsical comedy that flirts indirectly with some bigger themes (persistence of love etc).  There are many little details that add to the general good natured mood of the film.  Will worth watching.

The Scandalous Lady W
Natalie Dormer in another costume drama.  (No objections, m'lud.)   I learned a bit about the status of women in late 18th century Britain, though I wouldn't classify this as an educational film.

Bob le Flambeur. First of seven Jean-Pierre Melville films I've got stacked up to watch.

What a great film!

I loved this.

Lots of critics hated it. Not sure why - very "criticy" reasons, I suspect (i.e. they often don't even _try_ to enjoy a film, IMHO).

But possibly a marmite film.

Inspired by me mentioning it the other day or were you planning to watch it anyway? Not that you need an excuse to watch it - it is indeed a great film. The casino scene at the end is fantastic.

Buying it was a coincidence at least – I have been meaning to buy and watch a bunch of Melville films for ages – I remember a few from the Alain Delon season that either Channel 4 or BBC2 did many years ago and was recently particularly wanting to watch classic old French crime films.

I bought Le Samourai and noticed a box set of six other Melville films so bought that – it came before my copy of Le Samourai so I started watching them first.  I did remember that someone had mentioned Bob le Flambeur on here so that might have influenced my choice of watching that first!

Yes the casino scene is great, really nailbiting.
