What glue to repair cycling shoe
« on: 24 June, 2015, 10:23:47 am »
We completed our ride on Monday with the sole of my shoe held together with electrical tape and a toe strap.  About 1/3 the sole is detached.  Is a repair possible and what is the best glue to use?  It might take a little while to find replacement shoes as I have very wide feet.

I used overshoes to hold some shoes like this together for a while.

Had to get a new pair in the end though.  I'm not convinced there's an effective repair possible when this happens personally.
It's a reverse Elvis thing.

Shoe Goo does a reasonable job.

Do read the instructions and use outside

Is it the rubber detaching from the plastic part of the sole?

I used a brand called 'Technicoll' (less than a fiver on ebay) on some Shimano SPD shoes when this happened - the repair has lasted several months so far and doesn't appear to have any intention of failing any time soon.

Hmm, maybe I'll resurrect my Louis Garneaus, they're still knocking around somewhere...

Shoe goo +1  I have some motorbike boots that had a completely detached sole which the local cobbler couldn't resurrect. But shoo goo did.
Life is too important to be taken seriously.

Ditto Shoe Goo.  I finished our diagonale in 2012 with half the sole unstuck from one of my shoes - clipping on & off was a bit hairy. Stuck it with Shoe Goo & it's still fine.  Also used it to build up the toes where they had worn down on the road.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

Freesole (McNett) is much the same and may be easier to find.

I've had 3 shoe soles similarly start to detach
1 taken to a local cobbler (Westport) - lasted the life of the shoe
2 ditched and shoes replaced (Briancon)
3 stuck with Freesole (home) - still going after a coupe of months

Hi 321up.  You need an Acrylic based adhesive to bond to plastic.  The modern cycle shoe is either nylon (a modified plastic) or carbon.  If they are a Carbon sole - I am not certain but there will be an adhesive out there for laying the carbon sheeting or strands down.
Your ears are your rear-end defenders, keep them free of clutter and possibly live longer.

What on earth is 'a modified plastic'?  ???

I'm not quite certain why you'd be bothered about what gets used for the carbon layup either - ACR's very rapidly making it into my list of posters who say things that are superficially impressive, generally over-complicated, and wrong after the simplest analysis.

Personally, I was going to say that Shoo Goo gets a lot of recommendations in another place and that, as an adhesive specifically designed for shoe repair, it would be the first thing I'd try. The three posts up there^^^ that report success with it just confirm my view.

Plastic that has been bitten by a radioactive spider?
