Oi!! is there a maximum number of guesses before you get a "no" from the MC? otherwise you could just trot out every female singer from 1980 something to 1990 something.

and yes I know Joan A is black  :-*

Doesn't matter how many guesses I have - I'm getting my dates mixed up, and I thought the song was older than it is, so my guesses are a generation out anyway.

Still none the wiser.

Could be Tina Turner, perhaps. (And that will be my final guess, OK?)

Martin, jogler - I'm interested in the thought process that leads you to suggest Joan Armatrading and Gladys Knight when the complaint was that the song was "too black". Or is it one of those trick questions?

I took the "too black" comment to be a reflection of the cultural sensitivities of the time & not an indication of the colour of the artist whose manager turned it down.

Indeed. But it would still be unusual for the manager of a black artist to take that line - unless the artist was making a special effort to appeal to a white audience. Which thought has instantly brought to mind another black female artist of the mid-to-late-80s who would definitely fill that bill... but since I've had my quota of guesses, I shall keep schtum.

Citizen Smudge has it. The song was offered to Tina Turner shortly after she had achieved her comeback with Private Dancer and her management was clearly trying to keep her in the Whitney Houston/Lionel Richie/Sade territory.

Ironically, the person I have always wanted to hear sing that song is Peter Gabriel, but it isn't on his new album over cover versions.

Hurrah! Knew I'd get there in the end (sorry, Martin!). Whitney Houston was the other one I was thinking of as per my last post. Janet Jackson could have been another possibility.

OK, this should be a test of everyone's musical eclecticism, but probably very easy to google:

What do Roxy Music and Friendly Fires have in common?

I have a clue that I could give you but it would make the answer very obvious so I'll hold off on it for the time being.

OK, the clue is that the thing they have in common only applies to the original line-up of Roxy Music.

A Brian Eno connection?

Original line up of Roxy Music would have included Eno, but he was in later versions.  I think Bunn was the first to leave, so it must be something to do with him.  But I have no idea what.

Oh.  I just assumed Martin had got it right.

Tbh, I didn't look closely enough at the pic, so I didn't realise it was meant to be an answer. That's not the connection I was thinking of. Sorry, Martin.

It is to do with Brian Eno... nominally. Think along the lines of what he said when he left the band first time round.

True dat. But I was thinking more of the other comment he made, viz: "There's only room for one Bryan in this band."

Since it's clear that none of you old fogies even know who Friendly Fires are, I'll put you out of your misery: both bands feature members with the same name but spelt differently - Bryan Ferry/Brian Eno, and Ed Macfarlane/Edd Gibson.

Here's another question that might prove a bit easier -

What lessons can be learned from: Marianne Faithfull, Little Boots, Shakespear's Sister, Thomas Dolby and Stereolab?

Marianne Faithfull could be English (if a bit Broken), and Thomas Dolby would be Blinded by Science.  Shakespears Sister would teach History.

Stereolab & Little Boots I'm stuck on.  Symmetry would be part of Maths?

EDIT:  Beaten to it, but incomplete anyway :(

Mrs P says FM goes "Ha ha, it's magic" on A Kind of Magic
