LandRover Disco 2 - CD Multichanger problems
« on: 11 May, 2019, 04:36:34 pm »
6-CD multichanger under the drivers seat.  Periodically throws a wobbly in not recognising the CDs which is geverally fixed by ejecting the cartridge, disconnecting the unit and then reversing the sequence.

This time however, displaying "no cartridge" and tjhe eject button is producing a whirring noise but no mechanical action, cartridge is not ejecting.

Anyone else have one of these and dealt with the same problem?

the unit will be made by one of the usual makers (eg Pioneer) but branded as land rover. You can often identify which by comparing the cartridges.  A common fault with these units is that the microswitches inside (that tell the thing what the status is, and turn the motors on and off) go intermittent. Hence you can insert a cartridge and it won't register, for example.

Often there is a manual release of the cartridge possible; sometimes this is accessible through a hole in the casing, sometimes you have to take one cover off. Rarely you have to turn the gear train by hand to get the cartridge out.

These things do rely on numerous little microswitches and  plastic prongs doing the right thing in order for the mechanism to work. Some fault modes include leaving the motors powered up (eg to drive the cassette in) and this can burn them out.

Sorted.  Found a tip on t'internet.

While pushing the eject button, give the cassette a sharp tap with soemthing like the handle of a screwdriver, I used an ice scraper handle. Eject OK, reinsert and it read OK.

BTW - Brucey, it's a Harmon Kardon system in the Disco 2, AFAIK, so decent stuff.

quite suggestive of a dodgy microswitch, that.
