When we had a fish tank the cat used to lie on top of the heated lid & swat hopefully at the goldfish through the glass.

This chap is a little more ambitious....

When we had a fish tank the cat used to lie on top of the heated lid ...

When I were a student my biologist house-mated had a number of  fish tanks and the cat also used to lie on the heated lid of the largest tropical tank. One day the lid was off and the cat leapt as usual. The look on her face as she realised was never-to-be-forgotten. She landed in the water with all four paws absolutely outstretched but because it was quite a big tank still couldn't grip the sides. She sank slowly through the water column with paws outstretched and all her fur floating outwards looking like a cat-shaped dandilion. Before she reached bottom she rocketed upwards (heaven knows what she pushed against) and spectacularly exited the tank and fled the room, leaving stranded fish on the rug. Ever after, she would look before leaping.

Our cat used to ignore the fish tank in favour of the tub of fish food that was kept under it.  Eventually she worked out how to open the lid, and we came home to discover the carpet covered in fish flakes with a very happy looking cat nibbling away at them.
