Drying shoes in the digital media age
« on: 23 January, 2024, 08:45:11 pm »
Soaking shoes... do I have to go and buy a newspaper to stuff in them, or is there a modern solution?

Can get silica filled shoe dryers. They work better than newspaper, and no need to plug it in.
eg Drysure. https://www.drysure.co.uk/

Clearly the age of newspapers is genuinely gone.

Thanks everyone.

I use 4 pairs of Shimano RT5 shoes, 2 pairs of Shimano SH-MT91 boots (which take an age to dry) and 1 pair of Shimano SD66 sandals.

Yes, Drysure shoe dryers would be cheaper and take up a lot less storage.

MBR post on this issue said cat litter filled socks instead of those Drysure things. I'd use what I had available. Once upon a time we used to keep a stack of newspapers for such porpoises, these days the cat litter would be easier for us.

As an aside, I i also use (wood pellet) cat litter to soak up unwanted fats or cream before putting it in the food waste caddy.

How big do you think my feet are?!? My shoes are much smaller than womp rats, they'll just fall down the exhaust and block it - then what will Luke do to save the rebellion?

Do not dry leather (and some man made materials) shoes using heat (e.g. don't stick anything heated in them or stick them next to a radiator).  It will ruin them.

Take the insoles out, stuff them with kitchen roll (make sure it's a strong one) and change the paper when it gets damp.

Get used to riding home in slightly damp shoes.

At least ten years since I last bought a newspaper but we still have plenty around. Free ones picked up from here and there. Also tissue paper that comes inside boxes of stuff delivered. Same with those silica gel bags, though I haven't found those effective – probably need more of them.

Surely the answer in this New! Shiny Modern! digital age is to ride ones bike indoors using that internet that they have these days to connect you to other indoorsy cyclists as you battle up virtual hills.  Never venture outside again, never get rained on again, never need to dry your shoes again.
There are two ways you can get exercise out of a bicycle: you can
"overhaul" it, or you can ride it.  (Jerome K Jerome)

I pick up a big old handful of the evening standard whenever I'm in London, and then use that for drying shoes, lining the compost bin, mixing up araldite etc.
Appreciate that it might not be the most cost effective way of getting hold of it, but maybe they have stacks of the Metro at your local station, which could be picked up on your way past.

If you're doing it right, you should be sweating enough to get the inside of your shoes a little moist, surely...

I have a pair of Drysure but they're not fantastic. They don't do enough overnight to cope with a thorough soaking on the way home from work.

I like the idea mentioned upthread by Mrs. P of filling a sock with cat litter and stuffing that into the shoe.
What can be expected when it comes to ridding said sock of damp cat litter?
