I think an list of entrants online beforehand can be useful. It lets you check whether your entry has been received by the organiser. Even with online entry, you might not receive a confirmation email for whatever reason.
And it is nice to get an idea of how many people will be riding, plus checking whether there's anyone you know.
Its a fairly common thing for running races or mountain bike races etc Quite a few of the online entry systems do this as standard, eg SiEntries Online Event and Race Entries System

If you hear nothing from the organiser after applying for an event, take your bank mini-statement showing the cheque has been cashed ( or a PayPal printout ) and your Solicitor's business card.

You could of course notify your bank that a bloke at a bicycle event has defauded your account!

Paypal can be problematic in terms of issuing a receipt.  I have come across a number of instances where Paypal failed to generate a receipt for either the trader or the customer.  This can lead to embarresment for controllers at the event signing in point.    So if you never receive a receipt, it is a good idea to check with organiser
