Mark Cornish (ACME points champ 2021) is proposing a 300km 'Dropping a Clanger' jaunt from Ipswich this Saturday, (destination Gunn's bakery in Sandy for a Bedfordshire Clanger) - full details tbc. I was thinking of joining in from home (see route below) and then peeling off at Mildenhall. That'd make it a 200km day out for me. Let me know if you're interested.

Sounds interesting, but I’ll be in the South Downs testing a lower gear ratio.

This may not be on ACME radar but I'm running "The Way to the Sea" from Greenwich on Saturday 2nd July and it's relatively accessible for anyone living near the Norwich > Ipswich > Manningtree > Liverpool St. train line.

For example the 07:00 from Colchester / 07:18 from Chelmsford gets to London Stratford at 07h43 from where it's ~8.5 km ride to the start. Ignore the 8am start time, instead I'll have riders heading off between ~07:45 and ~08:30 (as per COVID times).

Details of the ride are here: https://www.audax.uk/event-details?eventId=9256

Many of us know BFC is a fine engineer and there's nothing bike related that he can't handle.  Well I'm here to report his talents extend beyond bikes to beds

At the weekend, whilst attempting to replace the gas struts on the bed shown below, I sheared a bolt on one of the hinges.  A quick call to BFC resulted in my taking the hinge (with 2 beers) round to BFC Towers where he drilled out the sheared bolt, re-tapped the hole and supplied two new bolts.  I only needed one bolt but according to BFC they have to be a matching pair don't they?  ;D

That's the second time he's dug me out of a sheared bolt hole  :hand:  One day I will learn to be less ham-fisted:

Another case of official permission following real world usage?

Hello all,

Sorry to butt in but if I do Fenland Friends, where do people usually stop for a kip? Is there a Travelodge someone mentioned on here before? Might have been felstedrider.

Thanks

@Nick

That prompted me to look myself. Lincoln is the sensible location, but nearly £100 for the Travelodge or £85 for the Premier Inn options.

Based on that I'll be riding through.

Many thanks - it'll be my 1st 600 so I might have to swallow it. Do you do the whole thing with no sleep at all?

Dunno!! Ask me when we are back in Dunmow...

The other 600s I've done (eg BCM, 3 Coasts, Windsor - Chester - Windsor) have had controls at which I could sleep. When I did the Flatlands perm I booked the Gainsborough Travelodge, but that was mid-week and only cost £33!

For me, Gainsborough Premier Inn for the civilised or the solidly built bus shelters along the ridge towards Lincoln. We have our ACME favourite here (it's the one with a blue plaque, 'Tomsk Slept Here'  ;)) - depending on the forecast overnight temperatures, it's either just a down jacket or a proper sleeping bag strapped onto the Carradice.

Thank you, Tomsk! Do you have a gps file for the route as I don’t see one on your site or the audax one?

I've never done the bus shelter thing but on my first 600 (Flatlanders) I surprised myself by having a few hours of good sleep in a wood tucked up in a bivvy bag.
