On a slightly different note I have a milestone birthday in January and I'm keen to do something.

I'm thinking a group 50k perm from the Spiritual Home the last Saturday of the month.   We could use the Hopstock route and have something at the Blue Egg part way round finishing with drinks/food.   If enough people are up for it will talk to our favourite landlord about using one of the function rooms.

It has been pointed out to me that this now clashes with the Oyster.   Back to the drawing board.

That’s harsh.  You put a hold on the date way back in 1973!  :D

Hello all,
Random literary question but very important that it's correct! Is the following piece of text written/punctuated correctly?
"What will you do with your life?", They said, "But what will you do?"
And he thought of this question as he rode his bike
And he smiled because the world was so beautiful
And the passage of time
Became his life.
- Unknown, but remembered.
Not sure if lines 2, 3 and 4 should have a comma after them?
Thanks!

I'd say it should read...

"What will you do with your life?" they said, "But what will you do?".
And he thought of this question as he rode his bike.  And (*) he smiled because the world was so beautiful and the passage of time became his life.

(*) strictly speaking you should *NOT*  ;D start a sentence with "And".  BTW Mrs Tomsk is a proof reader so will be able to give a definitive answer.

proof reading your proof reading analysis....

(*) strictly speaking you should *not* start a sentence with "And".

of course this correction will be made to look silly once you go back and correct your post, so just to be sure I don't look silly...  :) ....

Ha ha, many thanks - maybe Tomsk can pass this on to Mrs Tomsk.

I'm not sure about the starting a sentence with 'And'. I think it used to be frowned upon but I'm sure I read somewhere that' snot the case anymore. That said, what do I know; that's why I'm here in the first place!

Writing/presenting poetry is different to "standard" rules on grammar - a lot of the presentation is about timing

   and

               pauses to frame phrases.

Read it out loud, even if no one else is listening.

Indeed - it's mostly a question of style and consistency with poetry and the literary side of things. But you can certainly start a sentence with and, viz: Genesis Ch 1 v3 - And God said, "let there be light", and there was light.

(And BFC will have the brightest of them all.)

Is Hereward the Wake being put on this season? Can't see it in the AUK calendar. My fave 300km.

I'm giving Hereward a rest this year and reviving Kingdom of the East Saxons 400km (last seen in 2019). I'm also getting together a new 'Tourdax' 3 x 100km Brevet Populaires for July, heading into Hereward country.

Yes, like the idea of the 'Tourdax'!

for clarification... best read out loud (except for the timing cue)

Are soles fish?

Are (slight pause) soles fish?

Are soles        (wait a bit)      fish?

Just figure out what works to represent the intention, then persuade the display format to represent the intention.
Normal punctuation etc does not always apply to stuff that is intended to be presented/spoken - classic example is children's books and comics.

Thanks, BFC.

Yes, in the end I just took all of the valuable advice given to me into account and then had it written the way I thought it sounded the way I wanted it to. Anyway, it's too late to change it now  :jurek:

What's next? The ACME logo?

Thanks, guys!

I've ridden it before and enjoyed it. This year, nope. Might be a bit icy, then a bit wet, then who knows what later on. I'm saving myself for a ride or two in the week following Xmas in hopefully more benign conditions.

One more fool here. Considering riding to the start as well, but will be riding on spiked tyres if I do - the direct route isn't all gritted.

It's a 'no' from me. No spiked tyres and I'll be on the lash Saturday evening!

Sunday looks chilly first thing but temps come up pretty quickly over the day and into the evening.   I might return to riding early next week.   I think my only chance for a December 200 is the 27th, but I'll watch the weather.  Hopefully I can finish up on the last bike that's left in pieces.

(Technically I'm entered for a half marathon on Sunday.....)
