Next Saturday, 27th May, Soupy and I are planning on catching the Maldon stage of the Ride London Classique. It's a loop up towards Colchester, turnaround at Abberton reservoir and taking in three ascents of The Mighty North Hill - anyone fancy meeing up and spectating there around midday, followed by lunch somewhere?

https://www.ridelondon.co.uk/the-classique/the-stages/stage-two

Could I come out to play please Tom? Maybe join you from Dunmow to make a nice day out?

This has potential given I have now had to can my Welsh trip with Tippers but depends on if I get the green light to be back on the bike today... else I can't see how I would get up to Danbury other than car assist which will be a 'mare and slightly against my morals :)

Hello all, thanks for following my tracker and for your support!

Just a bit of a round-up.

The tailwind never really arrived until the final stage, Red Lodge to Great Dunmow. Going up was headwindy in places but it was generally okay, maybe just because it was earlier on and I had more energy. It really was dead calm on the way back south until Sunday got underway and it felt like the easterly bit of the NE wind got stronger.

The ride north was okay, the nighttime bit south was wonderful, the Sunday stint got harder and harder until Red Lodge, then it was easy all the way from there. Also met Ricky and we chatted for most of the last stage which made it much easier too.

I didn't get to stop until after Lincoln in the luxury Audax hotels, they were all occupied and I didn't want to disturb. All the hotels after that were just shelters with no bench to sleep on, so i pushed on. It was about 462 km and 0900 on Sunday when I found a spot dry enough (lots of dew about), so I laid on the grass under a tree but got hassled by bugs itching me and only had about 30 mins there, most of it awake. I got ready to leave and saw Ian, Arabella and Co. pass, so hurried on and caught them up. I had a quick chat and headed off on my own, I think. Anyway, they all passed Ricky and I after my Wahoo did its usual long distance meltdown and we waited fro it to reboot.

Owen and I got together a couple of times and it was good to chat with him, he didn't feel so good at one point but gutted it out and did the ride - impressive stuff.

Nice to have some encouragement through the forum and WhatsApp.

Glad to get my 2nd 600 done. Thanks to everyone for the organisation and support. I must help out at a control soon to give a bit back to the club. Let me know if there's anything coming up - I'd like to ride there and back.

Thanks,
Nick.

I think maybe meet somewhere near-ish for coffee and then head to North Hill and then Maldon. Pear Tree Pantry perhaps? I've not been there for some time: https://www.peartreepantry.co.uk/

On the climb itself, I'm guessing there will be a crowd at wherever they put the QOM line at the top, but for the hill climb TT a lot of spectators go to the slight bend with the salt bin and the war memorial poppy bench about half-way up. It's at a fairly steep bit with good sight-lines up and down the hill, plus a bit more room on the verge: https://www.google.com/maps/@51.7403915,0.5762529,3a,75y,160.46h,66.29t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1spDoYMQL4qUaShjVtDbGGVQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

Is there an ACME Dunwich Dynamo thread - I'd love to join, if you'll have a Fenlander?

Assuming the "Pick it up at Dunmow" option, my plan is to ride the redcurrent recumbent with new wheels and nice squashy tubeless tyres for comfiness. No guarantees on performance, but I had an 85km run last Sunday on the 28mm high-pressure spine rattlers and lived to tell the tale. I do still need to do hourly stops for blood glucose monitoring as I've not worked out how to get the data onto my Garmin yet.

Also known as Jos's Puke Bin.... (GS can fill you in with the finer details)...

I'm on D2 of getting back on the bike, over ran my allowance of 4 mins to push it to 5m20s... I am sure I'll go to hell for that. Not sure if the knee is better or worse, I've also got some knackered leg/feet tendon issues too... will see again tomorrow when I am allowed to ride the dizzy heights of 6mins - I might make a whole 2km of distance then!  ;D

I was half thinking of using the gravel bike to meet up with you lot, but that might be a bit too adventurous for my body... will know more when I check in with the leg twister on Thursday...

Not yet - someone will start one soon. Probably a Dunmow rendezvous and then ride back/bivi as some have done before.

Also ... I'll resurrect the Club Run thread for this Saturday's North Hill plans.

Café Ramblers is available on Saturday if you would like to assemble here.
Coffee is normally good, tea is variable!
To tempt out Jibbers (team car?) and anyone else, there is half a barrel of plum porter available ;D

Cakes will be available -

First ascent is due for 1300 - and last year I was there 45 minutes before the event and it filled up fast, so maybe a 11ish meet-up?

Can someone explain why Saturday's race has 3 ascents of North Hill, but only the first two count towards the QOM?
