Following last night's pub ride, I've just read up on Sir Evelyn Wood on t'web over breakfast - blimey quite a military career, even by bonkers Victorian Imperial standards!

He lived in later years and died at a most agreeable, symmetrical late Georgian villa just north o St Mary's  in Churchgate Street, Old Harlow.  Apparently there's a small wall memorial in the church dedicated to him but I've never found it open.
Less agreeably a modern house was crammed into part of the former garden of Sir Evelyn's former house against the wishes of the council in the late 90s.

Helpers' Ride for the Hopstock 200km, this Sunday - swing by the start around 08:00 and then meet 09:00 at the Guildhall in Thaxted (since the Compasses won't be open).

I'll be touring in Argyll/Islay then, but Soupy might well be interested.

Oooh. I rode the 120 last year, and thought I'd do the 200 this year for a change. But if you're riding the 120, maybe I'll ECE that instead. I'll see if anybody else is riding the 200, and if Tomsk will let me change.

8 ACME riders registered on the 120km, 5 on the 200 (not counting the 4 helpers who rode last Sunday). On the 50km, Jem has company in the form of Mr Tandemaniac, plus at least 3 of us on the Organiser's team who will be riding to the Blue Egg for fun and not the medal!

Also ECEing the 120 - though as only my second 200 on an upright this year, I’ll be taking it very easy:)

Thanks all. I've decided to switch to the 120, for the company, the leisurely breakfast, and avoids a 270km day on the 200, factoring in my return ride from home.

I'm keen on the 200, but not keen on getting up a couple of hours after going to sleep, then ride up from the smoke  :-[

Leisurely ride round the 200 today.  Rode most of the leg back from Spokes with 3 Welwyn Wheelers who were just doing the beer fest and camping.

I’ll be at Jordan’s Mill tomorrow.

Really sorry to be missing this, even though it represents my turn at having an event involving getting all the way to the start, then having a half way point basically at home, then riding miles away and having to get home again afterwards.

But I've had a bout of illness and I should probably wait a few more days before trying a long ride.

I'll be cross country to the Blue Egg and then on to the Spiritual Home via more bridleways and an airfield... so may see you there!

Just to mention this CUK thread about the A12 cycle path. I know it's been used in some ACME events, so might be of interest to some here. I'd suggest posting any comments there not here though, as it's a bit off-topic for this one.

The OP in the post has done a poor job at explaining where it is at from what I could see.  From the pictures looks like it overgrown vegitation on the Colchester bound bike path just after the sex shop but before the Fire HQ
Indeed here's there report.  Passable with care I think - one to watch out for on the way home from a pub!

I am planning to ride the Essex R&R 215k route check on Saturday 2nd September.
The event day is 16th September, any offers of help on the day will be gratefully put to work. Positions on offer include brevet stamping at Abberton Reservoir Visitor Centre from 11:46 to 16:24 and pizza cook in the Labour Hall from 13:00 to 21:00, plus general milling about & chatting.
Entries are currently quite low, maybe the guaranteed sunshine for the Abberton Controller will encourage more entries in the next couple of weeks!

I'm riding the below event in November. A second time for me. If anybody else is riding, there's a place on the entry form to add who you want to be grouped with, hint hint!

@owen, you've ridden the last 2, are you making it a hat trick?

Entries are open for this year's Moonrakers & Sunseekers 300. Expect the usual cake fuelled stops through the moonlit night to Poole. Scoff the sumptuous breakfast before heading back to Bristol forever seeking the warmth of the sun and some warm grub at the Arrivee.

Dumb question - I've never quite figured out whether ACME is a club that you actually join, or a loose association of riders, or something else?

All of the above, but most of all it's a state of mind and a collection box for your AUK points!

Might be able to help with the Abberton Reservoir Visitor Centre control.
