What does північних mean? I'm sure it's nothing to do with piwo and "brown", which would be the other possibility in Polish (though seems to be used exclusively of eyes) doesn't fit either.

It means northern, північ = north .

That fits in many ways. So пів would be half (or middle in this context, I suppose we can say halfway), and ніч would be night, and північ also means midnight?

Yes. The opposite is, obviously, південь.

While we're on the subject, I went on a CTC ride the other weekend and we ended up at the Clarion House, built in 1911 by Nelson ILP, at Roughlee, near Burnley. It is full of banners and pictures of people like Keir Hardie - real tears in the eyes stuff. Here you go:-
