But-but-but-

1) Minks are carnivores, their teeth are not designed for chewing, and mustellids don't chew wood (though they may tug a rope for fun).

2) Their scats are not the size of rat droppings - they're much larger!

3) Rats *can* chew holes the size of a fist through wood.

4) I think in fact the man has a rat on his boat and doesn't wish to admit it.

5) Yes, Charlotte has already punished me for reading the Torygraph (I only look at it for the crossword).
