Broken r/h shifter - replacement options?
« on: 16 July, 2023, 05:32:16 pm »
Hi,

I have a front ring triple and 9 speed rear.  My r/h shifter is broken, or at least it only shifts one way, to higher gears.  The LBS has tried replacing a screw which didn't hold. I did a 100 at the weekend on 3 gears, thanks to the triple.  Not much to the forum I am sure, but quite enough for my first meaningful ride in 6 years as part of a 70.3 triathlon.

Is it cost effective to try to replace the shifter  or is my money better spent upgrading the whole drive train to some sort of double arrangement?

I'd appreciate the thoughts of the collective.

TIA

GA cycles in Southampton would be able to give a price for overhauling shifters or for parts

cheap alternative.  I've used Microshift 9 speed stuff on one bike and it worked fine, sold the bike on after 2 years - sometimes shimano 105 stuff doesn't last that long

+1 for this - I've replaced 2 or 3 shifters for customers with broken 105 stuff in the last few months - works fine.

Bar-end lever? That's what my LBS did for me back in 2003 when the r/h RSX shifter broke
a week before an overseas cycle holiday.

Shimano - ultegra IIRC

Thanks - budget looks good but I'm not sure about having an old and shiny-ish silver l/h shifter, and a new black r/h shifter

How did they deal with the cosmetic if it did not match the other shifter?  By using this one ?

I accidentally did this when I needed to buy a new LH Shifter for my new build Faran, didn't notice the colour selection when I bought it.  I got over it, adn if anyone asks I can make a talking point out of it.

My 105 triple left hand shifter broke.  Luckily I spotted somebody selling one on Ebay; bagged it for £25 IIRC.  Now I have a silver lever and a black one, which doesn't bother me one iota.  I occasionally point it out to people just to make conversation.  Don't think anyone has ever noticed it unprompted.

They are so cheap that if the appearance was an issue I'd replace the LHS with a matching one
