How to change an inner tube on a brompton
« on: 24 June, 2010, 04:09:38 pm »
This is more of a question than a statement. How do I change an inner tube on a brommie without cocking up the gears. Are there any tricks or tips?

Thanks A

I've survived a few years without having to touch the rear wheel, but it's just a matter of time.

There's a few good and not-so-good clips on Youtube.

Crumbs, I didn't expect gear trouble changing a tube - I haven't had to yet either - but I have dropped the wheels out a few times and will be again tonight to fit some new mud guard blades....should I be doing anything to avoid messing gears up?

I viewed a Utube clip "Zen" before removing the rear wheel which was quite good, as I haven't dealt with a hub geared wheel before.

You can't remove the wheel without disconnecting the hub. But it's not difficult to put it back together again afterwards. Might take a little bit of adjusting to get the indexing right again, but nothing to worry about.

SRAMs are less precise than Sturmey-Archers when it comes to adjustment.  With a SRAM you push the grooved rod in the clasp thing until the cable is just on the verge of becoming taut in 3rd, then give it a quick spin and ensure you can still get 1st.

With Sturmey-Archer you line up the end of the solid part of the indicator toggle with the end of the hollow axle in middle gear.

FWIW, the current SA hub (the S-RF3) can't slip into "neutral" if you cock up the adjustment, but it can flit between gears which feels almost as bad.  Same goes for the SRAM.
Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.
