Since I use messenger a fair bit, anyone have a good recommendation for a lite version that I can install on the new laptop?  I'd like simple chat functionality, plus the checking of hotmail that the real MSN Messenger does if possible.  I'm trying to avoid too much bloatware.

I'd recommend Pidgin. It's lightweight, clean, and easy to use.

I used the ICQ one (go.icq.com I think) and it got better and better over the years as the first one was very buggy. Though I haven't used one that could do all e.g Y!, AIM, ICQ, GoogleTalk, MSN, IRC etc
