Best treatment for weather proofing pallet wood?

I've broken up a newish pallet¹ and intend to use it for battens on a stone wall which will support the wire for my espalier fruit trees.
I assume the wood is completely untreated, so I guess just a lick of exterior paint will not be enough.
Nominate a product please.

My neighbour made his fence from pallets. He stains it every year with Robseal. It would have been cheaper to used treated wood.

I train fruit trees on wire only. Why do you need the wood out of interest?

Personally I would go to a timber merchant and buy some pressure treated roofing battens if you wish to use timber.  Decent preservatives cost an arm and a leg and dont go far.

Thanks both. Good points.  You are right. I should spend money to save money.

The pallet will now be chopped up for kindling.

And why battens anyway?  Dunno.  Just thought it work better.

For my cordons and clients’ espaliers, fans, climbers etc I use vine eyes which screw into the mortar or stone (depending on rock type) and the ring is 2-3” from the face and you thread the wire through which gives you plenty of tying off options. WAY cheaper than timber.

Vine eyes and wire can be found at any horticultural supplier or the Internet.

I’ve got to say, decking and roofing battens have been the longest lasting timber I have used for clients’ fencing etc. Your Julie is bang on homee. Boyakasha

A Worcester Permain, and some sort of Conference pear. Bought them as babies and planted them November 2018.  The pear is doing really well and has produced fruit this year, so I'm a bit behind with the espalier pruning.  The apple is struggling. Some sort of insect infestation.  I'll sticky band them next month and hope it pulls through.

You can buy stainless wire and supports.  Looks nice for a price...
