Shouldn't it be "bass guitarist"? Saying "bassist" is like saying treblist or altoist, "bass" is not an instrument. Or is this thread about any instrument with a low range.

peter hook? The man is an absolute amateur, an absolute lack of technique, feel, or originality. Jah wobble has only one bassline, but boy is it a good one. for my money it's got to be bernard edwards for sheer groove with bootsy a close second, then people like jonas hellborg and stanley clarke for taking the instrument in different directions. Mark king is way up there, he's an amazing sponge soaking up the styles of jaco, clarke, larry graham, and fuzing it with the melodic style of john mclaughlin. Despite being known for overplayed slap, his real gems lie in fingerstyle.

Oh yes - 'Tom Sawyer' is a fine example of his talent

David Ellefson formerly of Megadeth is also good.

As is Michael Anthony of Van Halen fame - thinks 'Runnin with the Devil'

As is Andy Fraser of the band Free, he was only 16 when the fantastic 'Tons of Sobs' was released.

What Monsieur Pumpé says about Peter Hook is also true of the aforementioned Steve Severin, IMHO. In a band which featured Budgie on drums and (the late) John McGeoch on guitar, his bass playing was lacklustre indeed.

Mark King gets a very bad rap - it's not cool to like him 'cos of some of the noises made by Level 42, but he took slap bass to a whole new ahem level. Jools Holland, who ought to know a thing or two, referred to him as "Virtuosity Gone Mad".
