Maybe not yet old enough to be a great, but well up there with the greats.

 Tal Wilkenfeld

Early 20s and already bassist of choice to people like Jeff Beck, Chick Corea et al.

Danny Thompson - if we allow upright base

...

I'd have included him - he is a fabulously gifted and inventive musician - if he weren't such an arrogant dickhead to work with.

Vorsprung's sister is pretty cool, too.  Summat about a woman and a bass... ;)

I'm going for Mr Claypool, with an honourable mention for Flea.

Shouldn't it be "bass guitarist"? Saying "bassist" is like saying treblist or altoist, "bass" is not  an instrument. Or is this thread about any instrument with a low range.

I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Yup indeed.

But I am deeply concerned that Robbie Shakespeare (of Sly & Robbie fame) doesn't seem to have been mentioned yet! :o

The exotic-sounding (and looking) Paz Lenchantin did some some good stuff with Zwan.

And speaking of female bass players, has nobody mentioned Carol Kaye, Kim Gordon or Suzi Quatro yet?

Not to mention Meshell Ndegeocello, who really is rather good on the bass guitar.

I clearly asked the wrong questions  ;D.

In fact - what I should have said was "Each yACF member - name a bassist they've heard of - but no repeats"!

This thread turned out way better than I thought it would. Cool .

And speaking of female bass players...

Grog, of Flinch, then Feline and now Die So Fluid (and occasionally for Kelly Osborne and Mel C).

peter hook? The man is an absolute amateur, an absolute lack of technique, feel, or originality. Jah wobble has only one bassline, but boy is it a good one.  for my money it's got to be bernard edwards for sheer groove with bootsy a close second, then people like jonas hellborg and stanley clarke for taking the instrument in different directions. Mark king is way up there, he's an amazing sponge soaking up the styles of jaco, clarke, larry graham, and fuzing it with the melodic style of john mclaughlin. Despite being known for overplayed slap, his real gems lie in fingerstyle.

Whilst on Females of the species, has any one mentioned Sean Yseult yet?

Maybe not technicall up there with the likes of Claypool, Burton and Flea, but boy, can she crank out the heavy basslines.  Don't believe me, check out "More Human Than Human"

Is Mark King still playing?. I kept hearing rumours that he was still playing in small trios, etc, but nothing regular.

Oh yes -  'Tom Sawyer' is a fine example of his talent

David Ellefson formerly of Megadeth is also  good.

As is Michael Anthony of Van Halen fame - thinks 'Runnin with the Devil'

As is Andy Fraser of the band Free, he was only 16 when the fantastic  'Tons of Sobs' was released.

Also The Big Money - great playing.

What Monsieur Pumpé says about Peter Hook is also true of the aforementioned Steve Severin, IMHO.  In a band which featured Budgie on drums and (the late) John McGeoch on guitar, his bass playing was lacklustre indeed.

Mark King gets a very bad rap - it's not cool to like him 'cos of some of the noises made by Level 42, but he took slap bass to a whole new ahem level.  Jools Holland, who ought to know a thing or two, referred to him as "Virtuosity Gone Mad".
