BBC Four 21.00

On in about 20 minutes. 'Lance Armstrong. Stop At Nothing.'

A documentary that appears to show LA 'duped the world with a story of a miracle recovery from cancer'.

I'll be interested to see if there's anything new here. Despite his being so belligerent, unpleasant and downright vicious, I still think he rode a mean bike . . .
VELOMANCER

Well that's the more blunt way of putting it but as usual he's dead right.

I'm recording it to watch when I can stay awake.

It was good, nowt new in it but some great footage.

Velorama (on straight afterwards) is fabulous. There's some amazing archive footage and clips, and a mesmerising soundtrack.

I wonder what that early sixties race was - I'll point my dad at it, he'll probably know some of the riders, since it was on local roads.

Yes it is. I'll be watching that again.

And there are loads (mostly free, but you have to pay for some, including the Race for the Bride) on the BFI website:

Watching some of that made me feel old but I did enjoy the nostalgia.
Rod brakes
Trains with goods vans used for carrying bikes.
A child's trike with boot box.
And streets without cars parked nose to tail on both sides

Yup.

Loved the bit about Witcomb Cycles.

Yes and it still amazes me that my brand new TREK hasn't changed that much from the first "safety Bicycle".

My modern touring bike is almost identical to the touring bikes in the footage, down to the Carradice and Brooks (did you notice how almost every bicycle had a Brooks?)

Mine isn't, thobut.

Technology *has* progressed, but the basic safety bicycle is still very good at what it does.

I think the main difference, given that my 531 frame had downtube shifters, Brooks saddle & Carradice, is that the wheel rims are made from Alloy, making steep descents in the wet less of a heart-stopping ordeal.  I could probably live with everything else.

Penny-Farthing Cyclo-cross seemed to be pushing the envelope though.  I've never looked at a "Penny" and thought "I bet that would be great off-road through the woods".  Apparently though..some folk did think that.
